July 5, 2023 - Carolina League (CarL)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
The Lynchburg Hillcats ended their four-game skid with a 4-3 victory over the Salem Red Sox on Wednesday evening.
The Hillcats were carried by action early in the contest as they put a crooked number on the board in the second inning. Austin Peterson also picked up where he left off after his last start with a solid six inning performance.
Lynchburg would strike first in the second inning as Bubba Filia would ground into a fielder's choice that scored two. Juan Benjamin came home from third and Carson Tucker would score from second as he kept running when the ball got loose from the first baseman.
The next batter, Guy Lipscomb would lay down a bunt with two outs that resulted in a bang-bang play at first that went in favor of Lynchburg. With no one covering third, Bubba Filia broke for third. The Red Sox would throw the ball away attempting to throw him out which resulted in him scoring and Lipscomb ending up on third.
The Hillcats would tack on one more run in the third inning on a single from Wuilfredo Antunez that would plate Robert Lopez.
Austin Peterson would hold the Red Sox at bay for the next few innings. Salem would finally break through after a pair of runners would reach in the sixth inning. With two aboard, Brooks Brannon would deliver a three-run blast over the left field wall to cut the deficit to one.
From there, the bats would go silent as Braunny Munoz and Tomas Reyes combined for the final three innings of shutout baseball. Reyes is now tied for the Hillcat lead with five saves.
Lynchburg and Salem will square off for game three of the series on Thursday evening at Bank of the James Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
