Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
MOOSIC, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders got two home runs from newcomers on Friday night as they split two games with the Syracuse Mets. The RailRiders won the completion of Wednesday night's suspended game 5-3, and fell in the night cap 7-3.
The suspended contest from Wednesday, September 22 began with two outs in the top of the fifth inning and the RailRiders leading the Mets, 4-2. Brody Koerner took over on the mound and allowed a home run to Mark Vientos, the first batter he faced. Koerner settled down to retire the next seven batters he faced.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre got the run back in the bottom of the seventh when Oswald Peraza connected for a solo home run off Zack Godley. The blast was Peraza's first hit in Triple-A, coming in his fourth at-bat.
Luis Gil earned a six-out save, recording strikeouts for all six outs to close out the 5-3 victory. It was Gil's first save since 2015, when he recorded two for the DSL Twins. The win was credited to Hayden Wesneski (1-0) who threw 1.2 scoreless innings on Wednesday in his Triple-A debut.
In the nightcap, Syracuse jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth when David Thompson hit a three-run home run off Clarke Schmidt. In 4.2 innings of work, Schmidt (0-1) allowed four runs (one earned) while striking out eight and walking three.
The Mets tallied runs in the fifth and sixth to extend their lead to 5-0. Meanwhile, Adam Oller held the RailRiders to only one hit in 5.0 innings, but in the sixth against Jake Reed, Oswaldo Cabrera launched a two-run home run to right to cut the deficit to 5-2. It was Cabrera's first Triple-A home run and his 25th of the season overall.
In the top of the seventh, Khalil Lee connected for a two-run home run off Ron Marinaccio to extend Syracuse's lead to 7-2. In the bottom of the seventh, MLB rehabber Miguel Andujar brought in Socrates Brito with an RBI single to left to cut the deficit to 7-3, but that was as close as SWB would get.
The RailRiders continue their series with the Mets on Saturday afternoon at PNC Field with a doubleheader starting at 2:05 p.m. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is scheduled to start LHP JP Sears (5-0, 3.05) in game one, while RHP Sean Boyle (2-0. 0.47) is slated for the second contest.
