Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Gary, IN - The RailCats completed a three-game sweep of the St. Paul Saints with a 7-3 win on Sunday afternoon. Gary SouthShore improved to 44-30 with the win, while St. Paul dropped to 37-36, six and a half games behind the RailCats for the wild card spot.
In the home half of the second Drew Martinez walked with one out against St. Paul starter Drew Gay. Zac Mitchell and Nick Liles each singled to load the bases for the RailCats. Gay struck out Adam Klein for the second out then walked Mike Massaro with the bases loaded to give the RailCats the 1-0 lead.
With the bases still loaded, Brian Kolb wiped the bases clean with a double down the left field line to give the RailCats a 4-0 lead. Gay then walked Craig Maddox and was relieved by Dylan Thomas. Later in the inning, Christian Guerrero drew a bases loaded walk to add another run and make it 5-0.
Drew Gay walked a season-high five and allowed three hits. He was charged with all five runs the RailCats scored in the second. It was his shortest start and second loss of the season.
The Saints broke through in the fourth inning with the benefit of a throwing error by pitcher Billy Spottiswood. Spottiswood gloved a ground ball back to the mound off the bat of Brad Boyer and attempted to turn two but lobbed the ball into shallow center to put runners on the corners.
Willie Cabrera followed with a double down the left field line and Brandon Tripp singled home Boyer to make it 5-2. Ole Sheldon then came to the plate with runners on the corners and brought Cabrera home with a sac fly to center. RailCats led 5-3 after the top of the fourth.
The RailCats added one back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Drew Martinez. Martinez scored Brian Kolb for the second time in the game giving the 'Cats a 6-3 lead.
Spottiswood settled down after the rough fourth inning to turn in his fourth straight quality start of the season. He allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits and no walks. Billy struck out four and picked up his fifth victory of the season.
The RailCats added an insurance run in the home half of the seventh when Mike Massaro hit the first inside-the-park home run of the year off Bryan Henry. Massaro hit a hard line drive to right center field over the head of St. Paul center fielder Jose Hernandez to make the score 7-3.
The RailCats bullpen again closed the door with shutout innings by Taylor Sewitt, Estevan Uriegas and Marco Gonzalez. Gonzalez delivered a 1-2-3 ninth for his 12th straight scoreless appearance this season.
In the series, the RailCats bullpen allowed one run on five hits and one walk in 12 innings of work.
On Monday, the Kansas City T-Bones begin a three-game series with the RailCats. LHP Alain Quijano (9-5, 3.88 ERA) goes for the RailCats; Kansas City will start RHP Shawn Garceau (5-7, 4.74 ERA).
