Wichita Wingnuts News Release
NEWARK, NJ- The Wichita Wingnuts (49-25) beat the Can-Am League's Newark Bears (23-48) 13-5 at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Wingnuts scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Jonathan Davis drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches from Bears' starter Joe Testa. After Ryan Khoury walked, Jake Kahaulelio ripped a double down the left field line to score Davis with the tying run. John Rodriguez followed with a line drive single to left that scored Khoury to make it 3-2 Wichita. With runners on first and third and one out, Rodriguez stole second base. Kahaulelio scored from third when Bears' catcher Sandy DeLeon threw to second.
The Wingnuts added four in the top of the seventh. Khoury singled to left, moved to second on a walk to Kahaulelio, and advanced to third when Rodriguez reached on an error by shorstop Bridger Hunt. Damian Seguin relieved Testa and allowed a sacrifice fly to C.J. Ziegler that made it 5-2. Clevlen capped the inning with a three-run home run to left-center.
Khoury and Kahaulelio opened the top of the eighth with back-to-back singles. After Rodriguez was robbed by Bears' center fielder Trent Wilkins on a deep drive to left-center, Ziegler cleared the bases with a three-run home run. It was Ziegler's 21st home run of the season, tying a Wingnuts' single-season record held by Kelly Hunt and Greg Porter who each hit 21 in 2009. Cole Armstrong and Jared McDonald added two-out, RBI hits later in the eighth to stretch the lead to 13-2.
Newark scored two in the bottom of the eighth and one in the ninth before Ryan Scoles struck out Sean O'Hare with the bases loaded to close out the win.
Wander Nunez hit a two-out, two-run double to right-center in the bottom of the first to give the Bears an early 2-0 advantage.
Rodriguez homered on a line drive to right-center in the top of the third to get Wichita on the board at 2-1.
