Laredo Lemurs News Release
Amarillo, TX - Thanks in large part to the pitching of left-handed starter Greg Wilborn, the Lemurs avoided a sweep Sunday night with a 7-3 victory at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium.
Laredo (40-34) scored four runs in the second inning that would prove to be the difference. With the game scoreless, Balbino Fuenmayor led off the inning with a single to center. Fuenmayor moved to second after a walk of John Allen. Brian Peterson then doubled to score the game's first run. Danny Poma followed that with a base hit that scored Allen for a 2-0 lead. After an out and a walk to Harrison Kain, Jimmy Mojica reached on a fielder's choice. With two outs and the bases loaded, Stephen Douglas doubled to bring home both Kain and Poma for a 4-0 advantage.
Amarillo (40-31) cut the lead in half with a two-spot in the third inning. The Lemurs answered with two runs of their own in the fourth. Harrison Kain led off with a walk. Following a pitching change for the Sox, Jimmy Mojica tripled to score Kain. Mojica then came home on an RBI groundout by John Alonso to make it 6-2. Each team added one more run for the final outcome.
Wilborn (5-1) was the stopper Laredo needed on the mound as it moved to within one-and-a-half games of first place Amarillo in the South Division. Wilborn worked six-and-a-third with six strikeouts and five walks. He gave up three runs (two earned) on eight base hits. Jameson Maj and Chad Povich combined in relief to finish the game. Sox starter Brad Wilson took the loss. Wilson (1-2) pitched just three innings and allowed five runs (all earned) on six hits and four walks.
In his first game coming off the disabled list, Lemurs shortstop Jimmy Mojica had a triple, an RBI, and a run scored. Danny Poma had a three-hit night with an RBI and a run scored. Balbino Fuenmayor and Stephen Douglas both collected two hits in the win as well. Douglas also drove in two.
The Lemurs wrapped up a seven-game road trip with a 3-4 record against Amarillo and Kansas City. Laredo returns to Uni-Trade Stadium Monday, August 5th, for the start of a seven-game home stand against El Paso and Grand Prairie.
