Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats stared defeat in the (Gold)eyes and didn't blink rallying to tie the game in the ninth before Winnipeg eventually prevailed in extra innings to hand the ‘Cats a 3-2 defeat at U. S. Steel Yard Friday night.

Pitching and defense were the story at the ballpark on this night as both starting pitchers kept the opposing offense in check despite ten hits in the contest by both teams. Neither starter factored in the decision with RHP Scot Shaw (2-2) scattering nine hits and allowing two runs while striking two and walking one for the home team over five innings and Winnipeg righty Dustin Glant (1-2) allowing just one run while holding the home team to just five hits in his six innings of work.

RailCats first baseman Mike Rohde stayed hot at the plate adding a pair of hits to four from last night's contest and scoring the tying run for the ‘Cats in the ninth after he extended the contest with a two-out double to right. Pinch-hitter Craig Maddox stepped up next and belted a liner to left and boosted his average to .455 in his short time with the ‘Cats so far this season. Mike Massaro also added a pair of hits as well.

The Goldeyes got on the board first after Victor Ferrante scored on a single by former RailCat Louis Ott, but the ‘Cats answered in the home half of the inning to even the game at one run apiece. Shortstop Brad Boyer led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice by second baseman Brian Kolb, who replaced Jeff Beachum after a thumb injury in the top of the first. The next batter, center fielder Toddric Johnson, smacked a double down the first base line allowing Boyer to cross the plate.

With runners on first and second and nobody out in the top of the third after a pair of singles from Price Kendall and Kody Kaiser, Wes Long lined into the second triple play turned in RailCats history. With the hit-and-run on, a line drive straight to Rohde at first led the 6'4" left-handed hitter back to the bag for out number two and he threw to Boyer at second to record the final out. The only other triple play for the RailCats came back in 2003 against the St. Paul Saints in Minnesota.

Winnipeg took the lead in the fourth when a smash to third by Ferrante against a drawn-in infield was too hot handle and sent Brendan Myrow across the plate for a 2-1 Goldeyes lead, one they would hold until the bottom of the ninth inning. With two outs in the home half of the ninth, Rohde doubled to right field and scored when the newest RailCat Maddox pinch hit and singled on a line drive to left sending the game into extra innings.

The Goldeyes jumped right back in front in the tenth scratching across a run against RailCats closer David Nathanson who takes his first loss of the season. Nathanson struggled with his command walking two in the inning before the game-deciding Myrow single drove in Kendall from second. Reliever Jamie Vermilyea (1-0) picked up the win for the Goldeyes getting a second chance to preserve the victory for the visitors despite blowing the save in the bottom of the ninth.
