Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Hit into a triple play? Blow a one-run lead in the ninth inning? Extra inning? All no problem for the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

The Goldeyes (13-8) used an RBI single by Brian Myrow in the top of the 10th inning to squeak past the Gary SouthShore RailCats (9-12) 3-2 before 2,808 fans at U.S. Steel Yard Friday night in Gary.

It's Winnipeg's fifth win in its past six games.

The Goldeyes scored singles in the second and fourth innings and held a 2-1 lead for much of the game.

Goldeyes closer Jamie Vermilyea came in to shut the door in the ninth inning, but gave up a double to Mike Rohde and then watched pinch hitter Craig Maddox drive him in with a single one batter later.

However, Vermilyea took to the mound in the 10th inning with Winnipeg back on top and got Brian Kolb to ground out to short to end the game.

In the third inning, the Goldeyes hit into a triple play when Wes Long lined out to Gary first baseman Rohde, who promptly stepped on first to get Kody Kaiser out and then threw to second base to get Price Kendall out.

Myrow and Kaiser led Winnipeg with two hits each, while every Goldeyes player except Wes Long registered a hit in the game.

Vermilyea gets the win, but also suffers his second blown save of the season. He's blown the save in his last two save opportunities. Gary closer David Nathanson takes the loss for Gary.

Goldeyes starting pitcher Dustin Glant went six strong innings, allowing just a run on five hits and striking out three.

The Goldeyes send Ace Walker to the mound Saturday night to face Jack Frawley in the second game of this three-game series. Game time is 6:10 p.m. and all the action can be heard live on Sports Radio 1290, beginning with Around the Association at 4:30 p.m.
