Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts won 5-0 over the Kansas City T-Bones at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Friday night.
Nick Singleton improved to 6-0 with eight shutout innings. Singleton retired the leadoff hitter in every inning that he worked, and retired the first two hitters in seven of them. Singleton allowed just four hits, three walks, and struck out six. The T-Bones had multiple runners on base just once in the game, and had only two runners reach second.
T-Bones' left-hander Devin Anderson escaped trouble over the first three innings, but the Wingnuts finally broke through in the fourth and went on to score a single run in each of their final five team at bats.
With one out in the fourth, Josh Workman doubled to right field. Two batters later, Mike Conroy doubled to right as well, scoring Workman with the game's first run.
In the fifth, Josh Horn doubled down the left field line with one out. After Ryan Patterson walked, Jorge Cortes ripped a single into right field that scored Horn and made it 2-0. Horn finished the night 4 for 4 with a double, a run scored, and a sacrifice fly which came in the eighth inning.
The Wingnuts' third run came in the sixth. Edwin Bellorin doubled off the fence in center field with one out and advanced to third when Conroy singled to left. Thomas Fitzgerald was next and hit a groundball to second base. The T-Bones erased Conroy on the play, but Fitzgerald beat the relay to first allowing Bellorin to score.
Juan Richardson made it 4-0 in the seventh with a long home run down the left field line. Bellorin drew a leadoff walk in the eighth and moved to second on a single through the right side by Conroy. Fitzgerald laid down a perfect bunt along the third base line, setting up Horn's sacrifice fly to deep left field.
Brandon Mathes relieved Singleton, who threw 127 pitches over his eight scoreless innings, and worked a perfect top of the ninth to finish the win.
Anderson took the loss, allowing four earned runs on 13 hits in seven full innings.
Conroy had three hits in the game. It was Wichita's first team shutout since August 23, 2010 at Fort Worth.
The Wingnuts and T-Bones continue their inaugural series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Jonathan Ellis goes to the mound against right-hander T.J. Large. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
