Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX CITY, Iowa. - If pitching performance was a work of art, Ben Moore's on Friday night might be hanging in a museum.
The Sioux Falls Pheasants starter had one of the finest outings in franchise history with a three-hit, 7-1 victory over the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis and Clark Park. It was the seventh three-hitter in the 18-year franchise history.
Moore (4-0) gave up a one-out single to Derek Schermerhorn in the second inning and then retired the next twelve batters before issuing a walk. He carried a one-hit shutout until the seventh inning when Sioux City's Javier Brito led off with a solo home run. Brito was the only Explorer to touch second base all evening. Moore struck out seven in the complete-game victory while walking just two. His league-best ERA is 0.72.
The Pheasants' bats gave Moore plenty of support. Franciso Leandro drove in a run on a groundout in the second for the Pheasants' first run. Sioux Falls took advantage of an error to score their second run in the third inning. They broke open the in the sixth inning with a solo home run from Mark Shorey. Gus Milner later singled in a run, and Joe Anthonsen followed up with a two-run single to cap off the four-run, five-hit rally. Milner was a late addition to the lineup and went 3-for-4, leading all Pheasant hitters.
Brandon Sing led off the seventh with a solo home run, his league-leading 11th of the year, to extend the lead to 7-1.
Sioux City starter Kyle Wright (2-2) took the loss, giving up six runs and ten hits in six innings. He struck out six.
Moore needed just 96 pitches in the speedy two hour and 12 minute contest. The last Sioux Falls pitcher to throw a three-hit complete game was Ryan Ford against Sioux City on August 22, 2007.
The Pheasants improved their record to 9-12.
Game two of the three-game series is at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, in Sioux City. The game will be broadcast live on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
