El Paso Bullpen Keeps Captains At Bay, Shreveport-Bossier Loses Second Straight, 7-4

June 3, 2011 - American Association (AA)
Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La.---The Captains offense was held scoreless for the final six innings Friday night at Fair Grounds Field, as the El Paso Diablos won their second straight, 7-4. El Paso relievers Scott Vander Weg (2-1), Albert Montez, Jon Plefka and Ray Silva (S,3), held the Captains scoreless for 6.2 and the Diablos capitalized on Shreveport-Bossier defensive miscues in the third and fifth innings.

The Captains lost for just the second time all year when scoring first. Robert Perry stole third base in the first inning and scored on catcher Adam Deleo's throwing error to give the Captains the 1-0 lead. Perry, who came into the night as the American Association's steals leader, now has 13 stolen bases. He reached base safely four of five times.

The Diablos got to Captains starter Cody Railsback in the third. Railsback walked four in the inning and six overall. After Albenis Machado scored an unearned run (he reached on third baseman Joe Urtuzuastegui's throwing error), Adam Deleo cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left to make it 4-1 El Paso.

Shreveport-Bossier came back to tie the game however in the bottom of the inning. Uriak Marquez cut the lead to one on a two-run double and Bryan Frichter tied it on an RBI single, scoring Marquez. That would run Diablos starter Shaun Ellis from the game after just 2.1 innings.

In the fifth, El Paso retook the lead for good with RBI doubles for Kyle Nichols and Stephen Douglas and an RBI single for Kory Drew. All three runs, scored against Captains reliever Justin Young (1-3), were unearned as the Diablos took advantage of another Urtuzuastegui error.

In the eighth the Captains had their best opportunity to get back in the game. Palmer Karr Jr. started off the inning by singling off the leg of El Paso reliever Albert Montez, who had to come out of the game. Silva then came in and walked Mike Provencher, who had entered the game in the seventh as a defensive replacement for Frichter, who was thrown out by home plate umpire Bobby Entrekin for arguing a called strike out in the sixth.

Next up, Urtuzuastegui flew out to Drew in center and Karr Jr. advanced to third. However, the Diablos appealed to second and Karr was called out after the umpires ruled that he had left for third before Drew caught the ball. Provencher moved up to second with two outs on a Joey Gathright walk. The runners moved up on a Silva wild pitch, but Provencher was thrown out at home trying to stretch the one base wild pitch into a run.

Reliever Mark Haynes turned in another solid effort out of the pen. Striking out a season-high five in just two innings of work.

The sixth and final game of the series with El Paso takes place Saturday, June 4 at 7:05 p.m. Captains starter Ryan DiPietro will look to win his team-high fifth game of the year. El Paso will send David Whigham to the mound. Whigham will be making his second start of the series and third of the year against the Captains on Landers Dodge Championship Ring On A Stand Giveaway.
