Grand Prairie AirHogs News Release
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- Kevin Thompson only played five games for the Grand Prairie AirHogs this season, but he hurt them on Friday night, homering and scoring the game-winning run in the 11th inning as his new team, the St. Paul Saints, shook off a three-run first to beat the AirHogs 6-3 in front of 1,988 fans at QuikTrip Park to end Grand Prairie's franchise-best winning streak at nine.
It started brightly for the AirHogs (15-6), who scored three times on consecutive hits by Greg Porter, John Alonso, Tyler Henley and Jake Taylor off Donald Brandt in the first inning. But that was all the runs Grand Prairie would get, as Brandt and three relievers kept the AirHogs off the board for the final 10 innings.
AirHogs starter Greg Smith made it look like the early lead would stand up though, retiring the first nine Saints and keeping the 3-0 lead into the fifth. But St. Paul (13-7) got one back in the fifth, Thompson homered in the sixth and the Saints tied it on a sacrifice fly in the seventh against Bo Schultz. Dustin Cameron, Jon Hunton and Jakob Cunningham (0-1) retired nine straight Saints into the 11th, but Thompson led off with a double off Cunningham to break that string.
Jason Cooper then launched a two-run home run to right to give St. Paul its first lead of the night, and Robert Manuel (1-0), who got the last two outs in the 10th, retired the AirHogs around a two-out single by Guillermo Martinez to snap the AirHogs' nine-game winning streak.
Notes: The AirHogs out-hit the Saints 12-11 and now have recorded at least 10 hits in six straight games...Eight AirHogs had at least one hit and four had at least two, but one runner was thrown out at home plate, two were caught stealing and Grand Prairie left nine others on base...The AirHogs are now 0-2 in extra-inning games, both in 11 innings, both at home.
The AirHogs continue their three-game series with the Saints on Saturday, June 4, with Dallas Mavericks Night and a special edition of Fireworks Saturday Night. All fans wearing Mavericks gear get $5 off their tickets. Don't miss the renewed commitment to excellence and affordable family entertainment.
