Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - The Gary SouthShore RailCats stopped a three-game losing streak in a big way, scoring a 12-4 victory over the co-leaders of the North Division, the Winnipeg Goldeyes, in the opener of a three-game set on Monday night.

Winnipeg opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning as Ridge Carpenter opened the inning with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly from former RailCat Lou Ott. Scott Shaw limited the damage as a runner was left at third in the frame.

The RailCats responded by taking the lead in the top of the fourth. Brad Boyer and Cristian Guerrero collected consecutive hits to open the inning before a sacrifice from Mike Valadez moved the runners to second and third. Kyle Haines tied the game with a single to center before Mike Rohde parked the first pitch from Isaac Hess over the wall in right-center for his sixth homer of the year, a three-run shot to put the RailCats ahead 4-1.

Single runs crossed in the seventh and eighth with some rain falling to push the lead to 6-1. Rohde led off the sixth with a double and scored on an errant throw. Chris Carrara was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth to force home Valadez. The Goldeyes clawed within 6-3 with two runs in the bottom of the eighth before the flood gates opened in the top of the ninth.

Six runs crossed the plate in the ninth as the RailCats stretched the lead to 12-3 by batting around and slashing six hits. The six runs matched the most in a single inning this season, the fourth time this season that the 'Cats netted six runs in an inning. Boyer drove home a run with a single while Rohde and Brian Kolb added RBI singles before Carrara placed an exclamation point on the victory with a two-run homer to left, his first of the year. Winnipeg plated a run in the ninth to account for the final.

Shaw pitched six innings to collect his eighth win of the season, allowing just one run on five hits. Travis Minix recorded the save after entering in the eighth. All but one member of the lineup posted a hit as the RailCats, who have yet to lose four games in a row this year, amassed 15 in the affair. Boyer and Rohde posted three each with Rohde posting four RBIs.

The series continues tomorrow night with a 7:00 p.m. contest. Winnipeg has not announced a starter, but the RailCats will place RHP Nolan Nicholson (4-7, 6.45) on the mound.

The RailCats return home for a brief three-game series against former Northern League friends the Kansas City T-Bones on Friday, August 5 for a 7:10 p.m. game featuring plenty of activities at U. S. Steel Yard including post-game fireworks, postgame music in the Diamond Club, and Greek Night and a Negro League Celebration. For tickets call (219) 882-2255 or visit railcatsbaseball.com.
