St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (August 1, 2011) - The Saints have finally added another arm to their thinly stretched bullpen in left-handed pitcher Jesse English.
English comes over to the Saints after finishing up last season at Triple-A Syracuse for the Washington Nationals organization. English started the season with the Nationals, making the Opening Day roster and pitching in the first game of the season against the Philadelphia Phillies. English threw 7.0 innings in the bigs and recorded an ERA of 3.86 while striking out four batters. English was 2-1 with a 5.03 ERA in 19.2 innings last season at Triple-A. He pitched with the organization until July when he had to have season ending surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow.
English was originally drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the sixth round of the 2002 MLB June amateur draft. He spent seven years in their organization, reaching as high as Double-A in 2009, before being claimed off waivers by the Washington Nationals in September of 2010.
He appeared in the California-Carolina League All-Star Game in 2008, the year he went 13-7 with a 3.19 ERA in 26 starts.
In other news, the St. Paul Saints recently traded relief pitcher Robert Manuel to the Fort Worth Cats for a player to be named later. Manuel was 3-2 with a 4.73 ERA and recorded 13 saves in 32.1 innings.
The Saints roster now stands at league maximum with 22 players, 10 pitchers and 12 position players.
