Grand Prairie AirHogs News Release

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- Grand Prairie AirHogs righty Jason Jennings threw seven shutout innings for the second straight start at home, David Thomas scored two runs and homered and Stephen Douglas set a new American Association record by extending his hitting streak to 31, and the AirHogs escaped the stifling heat with a 3-1 win over the Amarillo Sox in front of 1,318 fans at QuikTrip Park.

Jennings (8-1) allowed three hits and three walks while striking out five. He allowed two baserunners in an inning twice, getting a flyout from Jeremy Sauceda to end the second, and a double play from Tim Alberts to end the sixth.

Travis Lawler (5-3) out-pitched Jennings through the first five innings, allowing only one hit and two walks. But he walked Thomas to start the sixth, and the AirHogs (46-27) took advantage. Thomas stole second and advanced to third on catcher Josh Banda's errant throw. Chris McMurray then walked, and Guillermo Martinez's sacrifice fly but Grand Prairie on the board.

After a single by Danny Figueroa and a flyout by Douglas, David Espinosa's RBI hit made it 2-0, and Thomas's seventh-inning two-out blast into the rightfield pool made it 3-0.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Douglas came up with a runner on first and laid down a perfect bunt to third, beating Van Pope's throw easily to break the two-year-old league record for longest hitting streak.

Kyle Gunderson allowed a long solo homer to Lee Cruz in the eighth for the only Amarillo run, but Jon Hunton shut the Sox (35-39) down in the ninth, pitching around a two-out broken-bat single by Banda in the ninth, striking out the side for his 17th save of the season

Notes: Pope and Banda had four of the five Amarillo hits...The Sox were 2-for-15 with runners on base...The AirHogs did not have a baserunner until McMurray walked with one out in the third...The game-time temperature was 107 degrees...Figueroa was the only AirHogs player with more than one hit.

The AirHogs continue their four-game series with the Amarillo Sox on Tuesday, August 2, at 7:05 p.m. Don't miss the renewed commitment to excellence and affordable family entertainment.
