RailCats Split Doubleheader in Wichita

Wichita, KS - The RailCats (47-35) earned a split of their doubleheader with Wichita (56-27) on Wednesday night. The Wingnuts took the opener 2-1 on a walkoff double and the RailCats bashed their way to a split with a 10-5 win in game two.

The split kept the RailCats lead in the wild card chase to two and a half games ahead of Winnipeg and three games ahead Lincoln and Laredo

In the first game the RailCats jumped on the board in the top of the first inning. Mike Massaro tripled down the first base line for his 13th triple of the year and Christian Vitters drove him in with a solid single to center.

Morgan Coombs managed to dance out of trouble in early on; stranding the bases loaded in each the first, second and third innings.

In the third inning, CJ Ziegler hit his 23rd homer of the year to tie the ballgame at one.

Morgan Coombs was removed in the fifth inning in favor of Matt Jernstad and received a no-decision. In four and â..." innings, Coombs allowed just one run on six hits and four walks. Morgan struck out five and threw 91 pitches. He received a no-decision.

In the seventh with reliever Kyle Lindquist on the mound, Brent Clevlan doubled with one out off of the wall in left. Abel Nieves followed with a double to left-center to score Clevlan to take a 2-1 walk-off victory for Wichita in the opener of the doubleheader.

Chris Smith received a no-decision for Wichita despite allowing just one run on seven hits and one walk in six innings. Nick Walters earned his fifth win of the season with a scoreless seventh inning.

The RailCats scored first in the second game of the doubleheader with a three-run second inning against starter Justin Klipp. Ryan Babineau walked on four pitches to begin the inning and scored on Reid Fronk's triple into the alley in right-center. Brian Kolb scored him with a solid single to left. Later, Ryan Brockett doubled to left to score Kolb and take a 3-0 RailCats lead.

The lead was short lived as Wichita rallied right back to tie the game in the bottom of the second. With runners on first and second, Johnny Bowden hit a line drive to center that Drew Martinez slid for and missed. The ball rolled all the way to the wall and scored a pair as Bowden went all the way to third with a triple. Ryan Khoury doubled in Bowden with a shot to left later in the inning to tie the game.

In the third, the RailCats grabbed the lead right back without the benefit of a hit. With the bases loaded (two walks and an error by Ryan Khoury), Reid Fronk drew a walk from Justin Klipp to score Mike Massaro and take a 4-3 lead. The RailCats added another when Brian Kolb grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to give the "˜Cats a 5-3 lead.

The RailCats finally knocked Klipp from the game in the third after Adam Klein tripled Zac Mitchell and Ryan Brockett home to give them a 7-3 lead. Klipp walked a season-high five and allowed seven runs, six earned, in three innings.

Against reliever Josh Stone, the RailCats added an insurance on an RBI groundout by Mike Massaro to make it 8-3.

The RailCats scored for their fifth consecutive inning in the sixth. Reid Fronk doubled and scored on an infield single by Drew Martinez. Zac Mitchell followed with an RBI triple to right-center off reliever Andrew Aizenstadt to make it 10-3 RailCats.

Wichita scratched out a single run in each of its final two at-bats. In the sixth with an RBI single by Abel Nieves against Stephen Hiscock and in the seventh with a solo homer off reliever Estevan Uriegas by Ryan Khoury to give the game its final margin, 10-5.

Stephen Hiscock earned his second win of the season with a six-inning effort in the second game of the doubleheader. He allowed four runs on six hits and struck out three.

The RailCats drew 10 walks in the second game to improve their record to 24-10 when they walk at least four times in a game.

The RailCats and Wingnuts complete their three-game series on Thursday with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. RHP Billy Spottiswood (5-2, 3.35 ERA) will throw for the RailCats, LHP Anthony Kapra (6-2, 3.87 ERA) will go for Wichita.
