Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks capitalized in the eighth, with clutch hits by Nic Jackson and C.J. Retherford to complete a two-run rally in a 3-2 defeat of the Rockland Boulders in front of 4,104 fans at Newman Outdoor Field Wednesday in inter-league play.
Singles by Mitch Einertson and Zach Penprase put the first two runners on base in the eighth, before Einertson was thrown out at home on a Ron Bourquin fielder's choice. With two outs, Penprase scored from second after an attempted throw to second to get Bourquin out ended up as an error off a Nic Jackson single. C.J. Retherford capped off the rally with an RBI single to center to put the RedHawks out front for good, 3-2.
Fargo-Moorhead (53-30) starter Alex Caldera gave up two runs in the first off three walks and a single, but gave up only two more hits in his seven innings of work and ended up striking out five. Derrick Miramontes improved to 2-1 in relief picking up a strikeout in the eighth, while Nate Kilcrease got an out in the ninth before Joe Harris came in for a two-out save.
Bobby Blevins pitched 7 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in the loss for Rockland (41-40). Blevins hadn't allowed a run until a Nic Jackson RBI single scored Penprase in the sixth. Garrett Johnson recorded 2/3 inning and struck out Keith Brachold to end the eighth.
Penprase led the RedHawks by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Jackson and Retherford had two hits and an RBI each.
Five players had hits for the Boulders, with Carlos Rivera hitting the lone runs in on a two-run RBI single in the first.
The RedHawks and Boulders conclude their four-game series Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field. Tickets are available at fmredhawks.com or by calling (701) 235-6161.
