Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
WICHITA, KS - The Gary South Shore RailCats fell 8-3 to the Wichita Wingnuts in the final game of the three game series Sunday at Lawrence- Dumont Stadium in Kansas. The Wingnuts win gave them two of three in the series a rematch of last year's American Association Championship Series.
Following a night where the RailCats shut out Wichita the Wingnuts made sure they would not get blanked when Carlo Testa hit a solo home run to center with one out in the home half of the first to make it 1-0 off of Stephen Bougher. The RailCats were quiet until Danny Pulfer returned the favor with a solo shot of his own for Gary to even the game at one in the top of the fourth.
RailCats took the lead in the fifth when Justin Gominsky hit a one out double and went to third on a Zac Mitchell single to right. With runners at the corners Miles Walding hit a drag bunt down the first base line and brought home Gominsky for a 2-1 RailCats lead. The play cost the RailCats Walding who pulled up with an apparent right hamstring injury. Walding who was activated on Saturday from the disabled list after suffering forearm tendonitis left the game and was on crutches as the team boarded the bus for the trip to Sioux City.
The RailCats would see the Wingnuts battle back in the home half of the fifth to take the lead off of Bougher. David Amberson doubled and was moved to third on a sac bunt by Taylor Oldham. With one out Ryan Khoury hit a pop up that carried from deep short to shallow left that Derek Smith could not get to giving Khoury a hit scoring Amberson. Khoury then stole second and went to third on a ground ball to short by Jake Kahaulelio that the RailCats Smith made an error on a low throw to first to put runners at the corners. Brent Clevlen then walked and with Chris McMurray at the plate Bougher threw a wild pitch that scored Khoury giving the Wingnuts the lead. McMurray would bounce out to third to end the inning.
The RailCats got a leadoff double in the seventh from Wally Backman Jr. who was moved to third by a Zac Mitchell sac bunt. The Cats went 1-2 with Backman at third and could not tie the game. In the eighth inning Danny Pulfer and Drew Martinez each walked off of Wingnuts reliever Alex Hinshaw to get the RailCats started. But the Wingnuts kept the RailCats off the board as the RailCats could not get the big hit to tie or take the lead.
In the both the seventh and eighth the Wingnuts got insurance runs to extend their lead with the big damage coming in the eighth. With one out Kevin Brahney walked David Amberson who a pitch later stole second. The next batter Taylor Oldham reached on an error by Derek Smith who misplayed a ground ball to allow Amberson to score. Ryan Khoury added an RBI single and it was 6-2. Carlo Testa then singled and Brent Clevlen launched triple to close out the scoring two more to make it 8-2.
The RailCats did get a run back in the ninth when Wally Backman Jr. hit a solo homerun make it 8-3 off of Wingnuts reliever Daniel Bennett. It was the RailCats first multiple homer game of the season and they have gone deep in back to back games for the first time in 2014. The win went to Time Brown (3-1) while Stephen Bougher (2-1) was charged with the loss. The team will continue their seven game road trip with a four game series set to open Monday night in Sioux City at 7:10. The game can be heard on WEFM 95.9 and online at RailCatsBaseball.com.
