Win Streak Ends at Six as Wingnuts Rolled by RailCats

Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS - The Wichita Wingnuts entered play on Saturday evening with a season-high six game win streak and feeling very good about the way they were playing. After the dust had settled on a 15-0 RailCats victory, it was the team from Indiana that was walking off of the Lawrence-Dumont turf with a skip in their step.

Wingnuts' starter Anthony Capra (3-1) entered the game having allowed just one run in his last four regular season starts going back to 2013. Capra was facing a left-hand dominant lineup for the RailCats, but things didn't go his way from the opening at bat. Danny Pulfer led off the game with a triple and came around to score a few pitches later when Drew Martinez singled him home. Josh Romanski followed with a third straight hit that put runners on the corners with nobody out. Romanski was caught in a rundown between first and second shortly afterward, which allowed Martinez to score without a throw and it was quickly 2-0 RailCats.

After Capra regrouped to work a clean second, Gary SouthShore (8-7) put another crooked number up in the third. With two outs, Martinez reached on another base hit and was driven in by a two-run blast to right-center by Romanski that landed beyond the outfield wall. Ryan Babineau followed by reaching on an infield single and then moving into scoring position on throwing error by Ryan Khoury. He would score the fifth run of the night on an RBI single by Jeremey Hamilton.

Capra was chased in the fourth inning after he walked in a pair of runs and had two more score on an error by first baseman J.T. Wise. Capra finished the day having thrown 3.2 innings while giving up nine runs, four earned, on nine hits and three walks. The start was the shortest of the season by a member of the Wingnuts' rotation. When the inning reached its' conclusion the scoreboard read 9-0 in Gary's favor.

The RailCats did not let up against new pitcher Matt Robertson in the fifth. Gary's lineup recorded eight straight hits to start the inning and scored a run on a sacrifice fly to finish the disastrous frame leading 15-0.

The Wingnuts (12-5) could never start a rally against Gary starter Stephen Hiscock (1-1). Hiscock, who had pitched against the Nuts last week, scattered six hits over 6.0 scoreless innings. Ethan Gibbons worked two scoreless innings himself, and Chuck Fontana followed by retiring the side in order in the ninth to close it out. It was the first time the Wingnuts were shutout since July 22, 2013.

Gary SouthShore's 21 hits and 15 runs were the most allowed in both categories by the Wingnuts this season. In fact the 15 runs were the most scored against the Wingnuts since June 16, 2011 at Amarillo, when the Sox scored 17. Hamilton led the RailCats by going 4-6 with three RBI and Martinez, Romanski, and Miles Walding each chipped in three hits apiece. The Wingnuts had three players record all eight of their hits. Brent Clevlen went 4-4 and the duo of Carlo Testa and David Amberson each racked up two.

The finale of this three-game set and the rubber match in the season series will take place on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. RHP Tim Brown works for the Wingnuts against RHP Stephen Bougher of the RailCats. There will be a limited number of Wingnuts' lanyards given away at the front gate to fans of all ages.
