Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS (June 1, 2014) - After falling in a lopsided manner to the Gary SouthShore RailCats in Saturday night's match-up, the Wichita Wingnuts brought their bats to the park on Sunday. Timely hitting and a couple of big innings allowed Wichita to win the game 8-3 and take the seven-game season series 4-3.
Carlo Testa started the game off on the right foot by blasting a long home run to dead centerfield in the very first inning. The ball bounded off of the bottom of the batter's eye to give the Wingnuts (13-5) a 1-0 lead against RailCats' starter Stephen Bougher (2-1).
Tim Brown (3-1) held Gary SouthShore (8-8) scoreless until the top of inning number four. Having faced the minimum through three, Brown left a two strike pitch out over the plate and Danny Pulfer drove it out of the park to left to tie the game.
In the fifth, the RailCats used their more customary small-ball manner to score a run and take the lead. With one out, Justin Gominsky doubled and moved to third on a Zac Mitchell base hit. The ninth batter Miles Walding put down a safety squeeze bunt that got past the glove of Brown and scored Gominsky from third. As Jake Kahaulelio, the second basemen, threw out Walding at first, the Gary shortstop went down in a heap grabbing his leg. He would not return to the game.
David Amberson began a Wingnuts' comeback in the fifth by drilling a ground rule double to right center. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by the very next batter Taylor Oldham. Ryan Khoury then hit a high pop up into shallow left field that nobody could corral, allowing Amberson to score and the Wingnuts to pull even. They took a 3-2 lead when Khoury stole second, advanced to third when Derek Smith, Walding's replacement, committed an error on a ball hit by Kahaulelio, and scored on a Bougher wild pitch. That inning was the last for the Gary right-hander who allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits and a walk.
The potent Wichita offense scored five runs combined in the seventh and eighth innings. A two-out, seventh inning, single by Mike Hernandez scored Kahaulelio, who had earlier been hit by a Coleman Stephens pitch. In the eighth it was RBI singles by Khoury and Testa as well as a two-run triple by Brent Clevlen that did the damage and gave the home squad an 8-3 cushion. Daniel Bennett allowed a solo home run to Wally Backman Jr. in the top of the ninth to close the scoring.
Khoury, Testa, and Clevlen each finished with a couple of RBI, while Amberson recorded his third straight multi-hit game. The Wingnuts concluded their seven-game homestand with an impressive 6-1 record.
The Wingnuts hit the road for the next week, beginning with a 7:05 p.m. start Monday night at Kansas City for the continuation of the KTA Turnpike Showdown. Wichita will call on RHP Justin Klipp to continue the hot start and the T-Bones will go with RHP Pat Doyle. The game can be heard live on 92.7 KWME with pre-game kicking off at 6:50 p.m. For information on season tickets, group outings, and party packages, call the Wingnuts' main office at (316) 264-NUTS, or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com .
