Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats raced out to an early lead and cruised to a 9-1 victory at U. S. Steel Yard Tuesday behind seven shutout innings from Carlos Rivas to even the series with the Sioux Falls Pheasants at a game apiece.

The RailCats (42-27) pounded out nine runs on 14 hits in the contest, five of which were unearned, to snap the Pheasants five game winning streak. Mike Massaro continued his recent tear at the plate collecting an RBI and three hits in the ballgame. Every spot in the batting order had at least one tally in the hit column for the 'Cats and three RailCats contributed a pair of base knocks. Kyle Haines and Mike Rohde each contributed two hits and scored twice while Brian Kolb, who entered the game in the third inning after Boyer was ejected, singled twice and added two RBI. Cristian Guerrero extended his season-long hitting streak to 14 games with a solo homer in the fourth.

Lefty Carlos Rivas improved to a sparkling 5-0 on the season and lowered his already impressive ERA to 1.81. Rivas pitched seven shutout innings allowing just four hits and struck out six Pheasants on a season-high 108 pitches. Will Krout allowed one run on three hits over his two innings of relief to close the door on Sioux Falls and force the decisive game of the series Wednesday, when RHP Scott Shaw (7-3, 4.57) of the RailCats is scheduled to take on RHP Brandon Rapoza (3-9, 5.84) for the Pheasants.

The RailCats broke through with a single tally in the third to take a brief 1-0 lead. Rohde led off the frame with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Mike Valadez. The University of Illinois product came around to score a batter later in the inning on an error by the Pheasants second baseman Kevin Carby.

The home team did most of their damage in the fourth exploding for five runs on five hits off Sioux Falls starting pitcher Adam Cowert who falls to 5-5 on the year after taking the loss. Guerrero lead off the inning with a no doubt, line drive bomb off the scoreboard in left-center field to extend the RailCats lead to 2-0. Toddric Johnson singled and Kyle Haines doubled to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Johnson came home to score on a Rohde sacrifice fly and Carrara's double to center drove in Haines for a 4-0 score. The second error of the game for Carby with two outs extended the inning and loaded the bases for Kolb. The Wheaton College (Ill.) alum hit a sharp groundball through the left side to drive in both Klein and Carrara.

The 'Cats tacked on three more in the eighth off Sioux Falls reliever Ryan Fleckenstein. Haines doubled for the second time in the ballgame to lead off the frame and Rohde moved him to third on a single. Valadez singled home Haines and moved to second when Carrara reached on an error. Rohde crossed the plate when Adam Klein hit into a twin killing and the score moved to 9-0 on a single by Massaro, which drove in Valadez.
