Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Winnipeg, Man. - Sloan Stanick scored with 1:57 remaining in the extra frame as the Prince Albert Raiders (8-12-0-1) erased a three-goal deficit to beat the top-ranked Winnipeg ICE (21-1-1-0) 4-3 in overtime on Sunday at Wayne Fleming Arena.
Landon Kosior had a goal and an assist in the contest, while Ozzy Wiesblatt chipped in a pair of assists. Evan Herman and Reece Vitelli also scored for the Raiders in the win.
The victory gave the Raiders a sweep of their two-game weekend trip to Manitoba after beating the Wheat Kings 2-1 in Brandon on Saturday night.
Winnipeg struck first on their second power play of the opening period. Matthew Savoie took a pass at the right faceoff circle. After a quick hesitation, he fired a shot on goal that got through Tikhon Chaika at the 9:41 mark of the period.
Conor Geekie extended the ICE's lead late in the frame. He made a quick move to avoid Chaika's poke check in front of the net and slid it into the open net to put the ICE up 2-0 after 20 minutes.
A two-on-one rush 3:09 into the second period gave the ICE a 3-0 lead. Jakin Smallwood made the backdoor pass to Mikey Milne who converted his 17th goal of the season.
Less than two minutes later, the Raiders responded. Wiesblatt sprung Herman on a breakaway. He faked to his backhand and stuffed a forehand through Daniel Hauser for his fifth of the season, making it a 3-1 game at the 4:46 mark of the period.
Exactly a minute later, the Raiders cut the lead to one. Kaiden Guhle's lead pass sent Vitelli and Keaton Sorensen in on a two-on-none rush. Vitelli and Sorensen went back and forth with the puck before Vitelli beat Hauser for his eighth of the season.
Kosior levelled things midway through the period during a period of four-on-four action. Streaking down the right wing, his shot from the right faceoff circle beat Hauser on the blocker side for his fourth of the season to even the score at 3-3 with 9:02 left in the middle frame.
After a wild second period, the teams played a fast and competitive third period as each one searched for the go-ahead marker. Chaika stood tall in goal for the Raiders, turning aside all eight shots put his way by Winnipeg.
In the overtime frame, an early penalty gave the ICE the opportunity to end the game. Chaika again held the ICE at bay, including a sprawling effort to cover the puck as time expired on Winnipeg's man advantage.
On the ensuing faceoff in the Raiders' end, Stanick forced a turnover off the draw and skated away on the left wing with Herman on a two-on-one rush. The Rapid City, Man. product kept and wired a shot past the glove hand of Hauser to end the game with his sixth goal of the season.
Chaika finished the game with 33 stops as he picked up his second straight in in as many starts. Hauser made 20 saves for Winnipeg in the loss.
The Raiders are off until Friday night when they Regina Pats visit the Art Hauser Centre on Pack The Pick-Up Night presented by The Car Guys at Mann-Northway Chevrolet GMC Buick and Pet Planet. Fans are asked to bring pet food donations to the game to support the Prince Albert SPCA. Game time is 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Raiders Office during open hours and at SaskTix.ca.
