Trenton Thunder News Release
(Reading, PA) - A three-hit effort from Ray Kruml was not enough Friday night as the Trenton Thunder (48-39) fell to the Reading Phillies (44-43) 6-1 in game one of a four-game set from FirstEnergy Stadium. The loss extends the Thunder's season-long losing streak to six games as the team stands just 1-7 in the month of July.
In the top of the third inning, the Thunder and their All Star catcher Austin Romine struck for the first and only time. With two outs and Ray Kruml at third base, Romine grounded a single over the second base bag and into centerfield to score Kruml and give Trenton a 1-0 advantage. It was the 36th run driven in of the season for Romine, a participant in Sunday's XM Futures Game.
The lead was brief, though, as the R-Phils brought two runs home in the bottom of the third against Manny Banuelos. Carlos Rivero singled with two outs to tie the score at 1-1 and came around to score an unearned run on a wild pitch to give Reading a 2-1 lead. Banuelos was tagged for three more runs in the bottom of the last frame, the bottom of the fifth, and finished surrendering five runs on eight hits in the loss.
The lone bright spot for the Thunder offensively came from their top two hitters in the batting order, Ray Kruml and Corban Joseph. The two combined for five of the team's eight hits. Kruml's three-hit night was his ninth of the season, a total that leads the team.
Game two of the four-game set in Reading, Pennsylvania will take place at 6:35 PM on Saturday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Thunder will give the nod to LHP Shaeffer Hall (6-4, 3.97), while the R-Phils will counter with RHP Austin Hyatt (7-5, 4.48). The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Hank Fuerst and Ben Youngerman begins at 6:20 PM. Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR or log-on to trentonthunder.com.
