R-Phils get back over .500 with series win in Richmond

(Richmond, VA) - Making his third start of the season, Tuesday night's showdown between the Fightin Phils and Flying Squirrels was a homecoming for Henrico native David Parkinson. With plenty of supporters amongst the 7,089 at The Diamond, the lefthander won his second road start of the season behind another complete performance from the Fightin Phils. Former Squirrel Ali Castillo came through with three hits against his former team, and added a huge two-RBI single in the top of the ninth that provided the cushion for a 5-2 victory that got the Fightins to 8-7.

Castillo went to work immediately when he led off the ballgame with the first of his three singles into right field. He then stole second base, and after advancing to third on Adam Haseley's groundout, a passed ball by catcher Hamlet Marte gave Reading the game's first run.

Parkinson countered Logan Webb (1-2), who pitched really well for Richmond and would finish his five innings by matching a career high with nine strikeouts and no more runs across. Parkinson retired the first seven batters he faced, and didn't surrender his first hit until Jalen Miller singled with one out in the fourth. Chris Shaw came up next and smoked a sinking liner to first, where Darick Hall went down to snag the hotshot and step on the bag for a huge inning-ending double play.

The lefthander surrendered back-to-back two-out singles to Jonah Arenado and Marte in the fifth, but got himself in line for the win by striking out pinch-hitter Dylan Davis to keep the lead at 1-0. In the top of the sixth, the R-Phils tacked on a pair of runs against Rodolfo Martinez, who walked Haseley on four pitches to start his night. With one out, Hall smashed a double that bounced over the center field wall, putting a pair of runners in scoring position with just one out. A wild pitch made it 2-0, and catcher Henri Lartigue banged a single into right to score the third Fightins run.

Parkinson (2-1) had one more two-out scare during his final inning in the sixth when he walked Miller, who'd eventually score on a wild pitch. Shaw singled, and Heath Quinn delivered the final blow with a run-scoring double to get the Squirrels back within a run at 3-2. JD Hammer got the first call from the bullpen, and kept it right there by breaking Johneshwy Fargas' bat on a comebacker to the mound. He'd deliver a scoreless seventh inning, and Luke Leftwich continued the bullpen's strong roadtrip with a pair of strikeouts in a 1-2-3 eighth.

In the ninth, Reading cashed in against Chase Johnson, whose second inning of relief started with a Lartigue single and a walk to pinch-hitter Josh Stephen. Arquimedes Gamboa got the job done with a sacrifice bunt, and Castillo took a 2-0 pitch the other way for a two-run single that gave the Fightins their second three-run lead at 5-2.

Addison Russ responded with his second save in the ninth, working around a broken bat infield single from Fargas and a pair of walks. The righthander gave Reading their second series win when he induced a slow roller off the bat of pinch-hitter Brandon Van Horn, with third baseman Luke Williams making a tremendous barehanded pick and throw to first to end the ballgame.
