Gwinnett Stripers News Release
Richmond Braves (46-36) @ Columbus Clippers (38-46)
Game # 83 Road Game # 47 ♦ July 3, 2007 ♦ 7:05 PM ♦ Cooper Stadium ♦ Columbus, OH
RHP Kevin Barry (3-3 3.68) vs. RHP Tim Redding (9-5 5.32)
TONIGHT'S GAME: Is the second of a two-game set and the second of 12 meetings, the second of six at Cooper Stadium. It is the 20th of 48 games vs. the West Division and the 14th of 24 on the road. Richmond is 11-8 vs. the West, 7-6 on the road. The seventh of an eight-game road trip (Richmond is 3-4). The Braves are in first place in the South Division by three and a half games over Durham.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Braves blanked the Clippers 4-0 Monday at Cooper Stadium. Three Braves pitchers combined to shutout the Clippers, scattering eight hits as the Braves notched their International League leading 11th shutout of the season and ended a four game losing streak. The Braves picked up all the offense they would need in the second inning when an RBI single by Corky Miller gave Richmond a 1-0 lead. The Braves added two runs in the sixth on a run-scoring double by Larry Bigbie and a single by Wes Timmons that chased Bigbie home. Richmond tacked on one more run in the eighth on a home run by Carlos Mendez. Jo-Jo Reyes tossed five scoreless innings to earn the win. Ryan Basner and Will Startup chipped in with two innings of shutout relief each. John Lannan took the loss. Timmons had three hits for the Braves. Larry Broadway had three hits for the Clippers.
GOOSE EGGS: The Braves 11th shutout last night keeps them on a pace to challenge the club record for shutouts in a season (19 in 1967). The Braves had a total of 11 shutouts last season. Richmond's last shutout at Cooper Stadium was August 15, 2004 (9-0). Richmond has had consecutive shutouts once this season (three straight from April 29 to May 3).
MOWING THEM DOWN: The Braves notched a season high 15 strikeouts in last night's game. The last time they struck out more than 15 in a game was April 18, 2006 when Braves pitchers fanned 16 at Buffalo.
COUNTDOWN TO 700: The Braves next win will be number 700 in the career of Braves manager Dave Brundage. He has a career record of 699-641(.522). Brundage is in his 10th season as a manager. Six of his previous nine clubs (all in the Seattle organization) advanced to the playoffs.
LEADERS OF THE PACK: The Braves lead the IL in ERA (3.35), most shutouts (11), and fewest home runs allowed (47). The Braves are second in stolen bases (85). They lead the league in percentage of opponents caught stealing (48-106 .453). Corky Miller leads the league's catchers in throwing runners out (30-62 .484). Gregor Blanco is tied for third in runs scored (55).
NUMBER CRUNCHING: The Braves have not had a sub-.500 road trip this season. Their worst record in five trips thus far this season is 4-4 (May 7-14 vs. Charlotte and Durham). Charlotte is the only one of the 11 IL parks the Braves have visited this season where they are below .500. Richmond is back to .500 against left-handed starting pitchers (12-12). The Braves 28 road wins is the most in the International League. Their 28-18 road record is the best in the IL (.609 to Buffalo's .605). The Braves are one of three IL clubs with better records on the road than at home (joining Buffalo and Pawtucket). Wes Timmons next RBI will be the 200th of his career.
REPRESENTING: RHP Manny Acosta will represent the Braves in the Triple-A All Star Game. INF Brent Lillibridge will play for the United States team in the MLB Future's Game. Braves manager Dave Brundage is on the U.S. coaching staff for the Future's Game. Pitching coach Guy Hansen will handle that role for the World squad at the Future's Game.
