Providence Bruins sign Brent Thompson
September 22, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
The Providence Bruins announced today that they have signed defenseman Brent Thompson to an American Hockey League contract for the upcoming 2004-05 season. He spent the 2003-04 season as the player/assistant coach of the Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League. In 61 games, he posted 5-24-29 totals and 172 PIM.
"We're really thrilled to have Brent become a Bruin," said head coach Scott Gordon. "He will bring us both a veteran and physical presence to our blueline, as well as leadership. Brent has over 800 games of professional experience, and he is as intense a competitor as there is."
Thompson, a 6'2", 210-pound native of Calgary, Alberta, is entering his 14th professional season. He is well-known to Bruin fans as one of the team's arch-rivals while playing for the Springfield Falcons from 1995-97, and the Hartford Wolf Pack from 1997-99. Thompson has 26-121-147 totals in 556 career AHL games. He ranks ninth in league history with 1,828 PIM. He has 37-185-222 totals and 2,788 PIM in 840 career professional games in the NHL, AHL, IHL and CHL.
"I'm excited to become a Bruin," said Thompson. "I've had a lot of great battles with Providence throughout my career, and I always thought that the fans were great. As a competitor, Providence was always a great place to play, because the fans know their hockey and support their team so much. I'm really looking forward to this season."
Thompson played three seasons of junior hockey with the Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL), tallying 18-85-103 totals and 414 PIM in 191 games from 1988-91. He was selected by the Los Angeles Kings as their first pick, 39th overall, in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. Thompson played 27 games with the Kings as a rookie in 1991-92. He has 1-10-11 totals and 352 PIM in 121 career NHL games with Los Angeles, the Winnipeg Jets and the Phoenix Coyotes.
Thompson has long been recognized as a leader on and off the ice. He served as the captain of the Hershey Bears (AHL) in 2002-03, and was the recipient of the AHL's Yanick Dupre Memorial Award in 1998-99. The award is given to the AHL's Man of the Year.
The Bruins are pleased to offer two current ticket specials. With every book of 10 FlexTix purchased, 2 FREE tickets for Opening Night will be added to the package. Fans can also purchase the Bruins' 3-Game Plan. There are four different 3-Game Plans to choose from, each offering three exciting games for just $24.
The Providence Bruins open their 13th season at home at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Providence on Friday, October 15 at 7:05 p.m. against the Springfield Falcons.
