Louisiana IceGators News Release

Lafayette, LA – Former New York Ranger Daniel Goneau skated on Cajundome ice for the first time this morning as the IceGators ha a light practice on day nine of training camp.

Goneau was with his wife, Isabelle, who gave birth to Matt at the beginning of training camp. He was supposed to get into town last week, but Hurricane Lili delayed his arrival. Goneau flew into New Orleans late Saturday and watched Sunday's exhibition game from the sidelines.

"It's nice to get going," said Goneau. "It's a great feeling to play hockey. The summers are long, especially at the end when everyone's in camp and you're at home."

Goneau is happy to be with the IceGators and is ready to contribute. "I've known Bruce Richardson since we were both little," said Goneau. "I want to play my best and get points early in the season, and that's going to help the team. That's what I'm here for, to play and to win."

Louisiana head coach and vice president of hockey operations Dave Farrish also announced that the IceGators have released three players from training camp – goaltender Edgars Eihvalds, forward Brett Neuls and defenseman Justin Cholak.

The IceGators' training camp roster is now at 22 – including three players who are currently attending camp with AHL Houston (Kevin Mitchell, Bruce Richardson, Dennis Shiryaev). Counting those three, Louisiana has 12 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders still in camp.

Louisiana opens its eighth ECHL season this Saturday at 7:05 p.m. in North Little Rock against the Arkansas RiverBlades. The IceGators' home opener is Friday, Oct. 18, at 7:05 p.m. against the Mississippi Sea Wolves.
