Alaska Aces News Release

Anchorage, Alaska – On a day where six players were released, the Anchorage Aces signed defenseman Valdemar Pelikovsky to a one-year deal for the 2002-03 season.

At age 23, the Czech-born Pelikovsky falls under the "developmental" classification in the West Coast Hockey League and gives the Aces young, raw talent on the blue line. He played in the Czech Elite League and according to head coach Rod Davidson, has been steadily improving throughout training camp.

"Valdemar has tremendous potential, and as he becomes more comfortable with the North American brand of pro hockey, he'll really have a chance to be something special," said Davidson.

Davidson gave six players their unconditional release after Monday's practice, including former Idaho and Anchorage forward Pavel Bacho, as the Aces sliced their roster from 31 players to 25.

The White team swept the Blue weekend in a pair of intrasquad scrimmages over the weekend. Kimbi Daniels scored four goals Friday night at Tesoro in a wild 10-9 shootout victory. Chris Pont, looking to wrap up one of the final forward positions, scored twice Saturday in Wasilla, including the game-winner for the White squad with 2:07 left in the third period in an eventual 5-3 decision.

The Aces will be wrapping up training camp this week with a final "meet & greet" Wednesday night at Sullivan Arena from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Fans also will have the opportunity to take advantage of the club's "red tag" sale, where the best seats still available for home games will be marked with a red tag.

Practice resumes at Tesoro tomorrow and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m.-Noon and is open to the public. The regular season opens Friday in Boise against the Idaho Steelheads, with live radio coverage on KFQD 750 AM beginning at 4:45 p.m. ADT.

Aces' Faces: Winger Yvan Corbin will be appearing tomorrow night from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the grand opening of Lowe's in South Anchorage.
