Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors of the West Coast Hockey League shutout the Idaho Steelheads 5-0 on Wednesday night, as they hosted the annual Project Warm Families Coat Drive. A record count of more than 2,400 coats were donated to the cause.
Sponsored by KGET-TV 17, KRAB Radio and The Gas Company, the turnout was a record in the event's history in Bakersfield. The United Way and the Bakersfield Police Activities League will donate the coats to needy families throughout Kern County. The number of coats was more than twice the amount brought in a season ago.
"We were overwhelmed with the number of coats that came in," said United Way of Kern County Campaign Director Jennifer Endes. "The coats will provide a lot of warmth for a lot of people in Kern County. We'd just like to thank the Condors and their wonderful fans for their generous contribution."
"This year's response was amazing," said Condors Assistant GM Chris Freshour. "Of our many charity events every year, this one may have the most tangible benefit; it's a basic need that most people can relate to. We had a large number of coats come in from season ticket holders and those that didn't need a ticket to the game, but just wanted to make a contribution."
In addition, the crowd of 5,933 was the largest crowd for a non-Friday or Saturday game this season. It is the second-largest weekday crowd Bakersfield has ever seen, dating back to a 5-4 shootout win over the Tacoma Sabercats on March 24th, 1999 (6,933).
The Condors are in Long Beach for a pair starting tonight at 7:30pm. Saturday's game, with a 7:00pm start, is the featured season ticket holder game. All Condors full-season ticket holders received a voucher for free admission to this game at the Long Beach arena in their ticket books. Vouchers must be redeemed in person at the Long Beach Arena box office at 300 E. Ocean Blvd. in Long Beach. For more information, or directions, call (562) 436-3636. For fans sticking around Bakersfield, another episode of "Condors Classics" can be seen tonight on Time Warner Cable Ch. 21. Fans can relive a win over Idaho on 2/18/01, a game which featured Paul Rosebush's memorable high-flying goal. All Condors games, home and away, can be heard live on KGEO AM 1230, with "Condors Countdown" beginning 15 minutes prior to face off. Condors Broadcaster Kevin Bartl handles the play-by-play.
The team returns home to host the Idaho Steelheads on Sunday at 5:00pm. That game is another Jersey Off Our Backs Raffle and Auction, for the team's Metal Blade warm up jerseys. Everyone in attendance will have a chance to win one of five to be raffled off, and the others will be auctioned at center ice after the game to raise money for the American Bone Marrow Donor Registry. The Spanish Radio Group sponsors the event.
Individual tickets can be purchased at the Centennial Garden Box Office, by calling Ticketmaster at 322-2525, online at ticketmaster.com or stopping by any Ticketmaster location. Season tickets and group outings may be purchased by calling 324-PUCK (7825) or by visiting the Condors office next to Centennial Garden.
Condors droppings: The Condors monthly website auction features the chance to co-host the Condors Coach's Show, live from the Holiday Inn Select. The winner will sit alongside Condors Broadcaster Kevin Bartl and Head Coach Paul Kelly, and interview select Condors players for the show, which airs live on Thursday nights from 6-7pm on KGEO AM 1230. They will also receive a Condors long sleeve T-shirt and four tickets to an upcoming game. Log on to www.bakersfieldcondors.com to place your bid. All proceeds go towards the American Red Cross - Kern County Chapter.
