Toledo Walleye News Release

(Toledo, Ohio) The Toledo Storm of the East Coast Hockey League battled back from three separate one goal deficits, tied things with just 11 seconds to go in regulation, but gave up an overtime game winner to the Dayton Bombers with 21 seconds remaining in the sudden death session, losing 4-3.

Despite the overtime loss, the Storm extended the team's unbeaten in regulation streak to seven games (5-0-2). In fact, Toledo has only lost one time in regulation in the last fifteen games (11-1-3) and remains on top of the Northwest Division with 59 points after 39 games (27-7-5=59). Dayton opened the scoring at 5:19 of the first when a defensive zone turnover by the Storm resulted in a clean one-on-none chance for Brian Cummings, who made a nice move to the backhand to beat Toledo's goaltender, Doug Teskey.

The Storm answered at 17:45 of the first with a put-back by Darryl Bootland, who jammed a loose puck through the legs of Bomber goaltender Shane Bendera after he stopped a shot from the right wing point by Timo Helbling. After a scoreless second, the Bombers went back on top, 2-1, 51 seconds into the third when Chris M. Thompson blasted one off the top of the right circle that beat Teskey low stick side while the Bombers were on the power play.

But, again, the Storm rebounded when Jeff Johnstone finished after Bendera rejected a Jeff Mitchell wrap-around attempt at 7:02 of the third. Things looked bleak for Toledo when Torrey DiRoberto ripped one behind Teskey from the high slot with only 3:37 remaining. But the Storm would not die. With the goaltender pulled and the sixth attacker out, the Storm finished an extended flurry with Alexandre Jacques' twentieth goal of the season with just 11 seconds remaining in the game. In the overtime, the Storm controlled the tempo, but it was Dayton that would score.

With only 21 seconds remaining in the OT, Chris M. Thompson picked up a loose puck in the high slot and ripped it toward the goal. A Toledo defender blocked the shot but was unable to clear the puck as Fred Slukynksy corralled the puck out in front of the Toledo net and ripped it under the bar to (coincidentally) give Dayton their third consecutive 4-3 overtime victory.
