San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Gulls soared to an easy 8-3 win over the last-place Anchorage Aces Friday night in front of 5,127 fans at the San Diego Sports Arena. Cory Cyrenne earned a hat trick and Sylvain Deschatelets notched six points to keep the red-hot Gulls flying high. The win keeps the Gulls (23-12-1) sitting comfortably in second place in West Coast Hockey League standings and keeps Anchorage (10-27-2) stuck in the cellar.

Gulls defenseman Mike Garrow lit the lamp first with a slapshot from the high slot that beat Anchorage goaltender Ryan Person on his glove side. Gulls captain Dennis Purdie fed a pass to Garrow who one-timed the shot. Mark Pederson also earned an assist on the goal that came at 9:26 of the first period.

Cyrenne was next to strike, beating Person after a scramble in front of the net. R.J. Enga and Deschatelets both had shots and Cyrenne backhanded a rebound home to score at 10:34 of the first period.

San Diego team points leader Mark Pederson notched his 18th goal of the season from the left post near the crease at 11:44 of the first period. Purdie scored next with a wrap-around goal that he tucked through the five-hole of Person. Deschatelets fed a pass to Purdie who skated the puck around the net and came in all alone at 12:51.

Anchorage briefly stopped the Gulls' scoring flurry when they notched a point of their own at 15:16 of the first period. Dave Csumrik took a slapshot from the top of the right circle that beat San Diego goaltender Chris Classen just under the crossbar.

The Gulls were quick to bite back however, when Samy Nasreddine found the back of the net at 19:14. The backhand shot from the slot beat Person over the shoulder on his glove side.

Deschatelets earned his third point of the game when he beat Person at 8:25 of the second period. The goal came amongst a flurry of shots in front of Person before Deshatelets banged one home for his fourth point of the game.

Anchorage looked to be back in the game when Dean Larson and Kevin McNeill both notched points for Anchorage. Larson earned a power-play goal at 13:28 of the second, beating Classen glove side with a shot from the bottom of the left circle. McNeill scored with Classen sprawled on the ice and Gulls' defenseman Jamie Black crouched in the net. The goal came at 15:28 of the second period.

Cyrenne notched his second goal of the game at 16:30 of the second period with a one-timer from the top of the crease. His third goal and fourth point of the game came at 12:40 of the third period when he beat Person glove side.

The Gulls' backup netminder Classen gave fans a command performance, blocking 29 Anchorage shots. Person had to face a whopping 42 shots from the Gulls.

The two teams exchanged frustrations with multiple confrontations throughout the game resulting in a handful of penalties and misconducts for each team.
