San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Gulls look to continue its supremacy over the Anchorage Aces when the two battle tonight at the Sports Arena. The Gulls are 51-13-3 all-time against the Aces, dating back to 1995. San Diego is 26-2-1 against Anchorage on home ice.
More importantly, the Gulls are winners of 14 of their last 16 overall. They remain in sole possession of second place with 45 points, four ahead of the Bakersfield Condors. San Diego sits 10 points behind the Idaho Steelheads.
The Blue and Orange keep on winning, but have struggled a bit offensively lately. During their 12-game win streak, the Gulls scored 51 goals (4.25/game). They've only produced nine (2.25/game) the last four contests. San Diego is also in a power play drought, having gone 0 for its last 23.
San Diego is however the best defensive club in the West Coast Hockey League, allowing 2.17 goals per game. Trevor Koenig is the biggest reason why. Coming into tonight's action, Koenig leads all netminders with 20 wins, a 1.81 goals against average and six shutouts. Cris Classen gave Koenig a rest Wednesday night in Long Beach, his first in 12 games. Koenig has played in all but four games this season.
The Aces come in with the league's worst record and are 18 points out of a playoff spot. They're in the midst of a six-game winless skid and have won once in their last 11 games.
Anchorage does ok offensively, but defensively is its sore spot. In 38 games this season, the Aces have allowed a league-high 170 goals (4.47/game). They've allowed 16 power-play goals in the last eight games, dropping their league-worst penalty killing percentage to 75.4.
Dean Larson and Yvan Corbin are the top two leading scorers in the WCHL. Larson, who's the all-time league leader in points, comes into tonight with 50 (19g, 31a). Corbin has 45 points and 21 goals, the most in the league.
San Diego has outscored Anchorage 25-11 this season and 12-1 over the last two games. The two teams meet seven more times this season, including tomorrow night at the Sports Arena.
All games can be heard live on 1130AM-KSDO and at www.ksdo.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show broadcasts live every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on wsradio.com with Tera Black and Jeremy Zager hosting.
