
Blades Fall to Stingrays 6-5

ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (20-12-8) dropped their fifth straight contest after they fell to the South Carolina Stingrays (23-15-3) 6-5 in front of a crowd of 6,311 at TECO Arena on Friday night. South Carolina forward Adam Calder picked up a hat trick and defenseman Ryan Brindley notched the game winning goal for the Stingrays.
The Stingrays got on the board early after forward Adam Calder registered his 16th goal of the year at the 5:20 mark of the period. Florida forward Kevin Brown redirected a Tom Buckley shot to tie the game at 1-1. Brown then added his second goal of the game after he slipped a shot underneath South Carolina netminder Kirk Daubenspeck at the 14:41 mark of the period to make it 2-1. Florida Forward Don Smith then fired an innocent wrist shot that fooled Daubenspeck to give the Everblades a 3-1 lead.
However, in the second period the Stingrays stormed back on two consecutive goals off the stick of forward Adam Calder to give him the hat trick. The Everblades then took a 4-3 lead after Ryan Murphy picked up a loose puck and fired it into the net at the 13:11 mark of the second period. The Stingrays once again evened the contest at 4-4 when Dave Seitz slipped the puck past Zepp on the power play. The Everblades regained the lead and made it 5-4 on an individual effort by forward Joe Blaznek who broke into the offensive zone and ripped a slap shot past Daubenspeck at the 19:38 mark of the second.
The Stingrays battled back and tied the game at the 12:47 mark of the third period on a goal by forward Andy Powers. South Carolina forward Rod Taylor picked up an assist on Powers 8th goal of the season. With the assist, Taylor tied the all-time record for ECHL career points with 685. The Stingrays then notched the game winning goal off the stick of defenseman Ryan Brindley who broke into the Everblades zone and snapped a shot past Zepp at the 17:47 mark of the period to vault the Stingrays into
Florida goaltender Rob Zepp (15-8-5) stopped 20 of 26 shots he faced while South Carolina netminder Kirk Daubenspeck (22-11-3) stopped 29 of 34 shots. The Everblades were 2 for 5 on the power play while the Stingrays were 3 for 8.
Florida hosts the Stingrays in game two of the two game series on Saturday night at 7:30 PM.
