Saginaw Spirit News Release
SAGINAW, MI - On Saturday, the Saginaw Spirit (22-30-3-3 50 points, 8th Western Conference) take on the Erie Otters (45-11-1-0 91 points, 1st Western Conference, 1st OHL, 1st CHL) at the Erie Insurance Arena in the fourth and final matchup of the season. The Spirit have won the first two of three games against the Otters this season. The puck drops at 7:00 p.m.
The Spirit changed the outlook of their season this past week, bringing in Moe Mantha as interim head coach, and beating the top two teams in the Western Conference to stop an eight-game slide. Saginaw finished last week with wins against Sarnia and Erie at home, before dropping a 4-1 contest to Sault Ste. Marie last Saturday at The Dow Event Center. With a win tonight in Erie, the Spirit would become the first team in the OHL to beat the Otters in a season series.
The Otters, stockpiled with perennial NHL talent, have won their last two contests after dropping a 3-1 decision to the Spirit last Friday night in Saginaw. This offensive juggernaut has had its troubles scoring against the Spirit. Leading scorers for the Otters Dylan Strome (ARZ) and Alex DeBrincat ('16 Draft) have combined for only three points against the Spirit this season and have a combined -10 plus/minus ranking.
Head-to-Head:
The Spirit have won two of the first three meetings against the Otters in the 2015-16 season. Saginaw became the first team to beat the Otters on home-ice back on October 24th, when they stunned the Otters, 6-3. (Box Score) On November 21st, the Otters held on to knock off the Spirit 3-2 at The Dow Event Center. (Box Score) On February 19th, the Spirit used a solid defensive performance to trip up the Otters, 3-1. Former Otters draft pick Hayden Hodgson scored the game-winning goal for the Spirit. (Box Score)
