Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, W.V. - August 12, 2015) - The West Virginia Power completed the sweep of the Delmarva Shorebirds with a 5-2 win on Wednesday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. A quality start by Colten Brewer and three shutout frames by the bullpen gave West Virginia its fourth consecutive win.
Following a run-scoring second inning by the Shorebirds the Power responded with three runs in the bottom of the third. Yermin Mercedes clubbed a solo home run to right field to give the Shorebirds an early lead. In the third, Tito Polo led off the inning with a solo shot to left. Jordan Luplow drew a walk and reached second on a single by Connor Joe. Luplow crossed home on a go-ahead double from Michael Suchy and Jerrick Suiter tallied the final RBI of the inning for the Power with a groundout which scored Joe.
Delmarva scored their final run in the fifth on a Guillermo Salas RBI single.
West Virginia took advantage of poor defense by the Shorebirds to add insurance in the eighth. With Suchy on second, Suiter singled to left field and the throw back to the infield skipped past Jomar Reyes to allow Suchy to score from third. Suiter later scored on Francisco Diaz' RBI single to left to give West Virginia a 5-2 lead.
Colten Brewer (4-9) worked six innings to earn the victory. The right hander surrendered two runs on eight hits and struck out four while registering his fifth quality start of the season. Josh Walker (7-3) took the loss after he surrendered all three of his runs in the third inning. Nick Neumann earned his 14th save of the season and is one shy of matching Nate Kilcrease's franchise record set in the 2012 season.
Jordan Luplow went went 1-for-4 with a single in the first inning to bump his hit streak to a career-best 11 games.
West Virginia (32-14, 69-46) finished the series with Delmarva (22-24, 55-59) with wins in every game and finished the year 12-3 against Delmarva.
