Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Wednesday night's game at Fluor Field between the Greenville Drive and Asheville Tourists was close for nine innings, but it was the visiting Tourists who won out, scoring in the ninth to snag a 3-2 victory at Fluor Field.
Asheville's (27-17, 59-55) ninth inning began when Shane Hoelscher lined a single off the glove of Drive (21-24, 59-56) reliever Kuehl McEachern (6-3). After a sacrifice bunt by Dom Nunez, Yonathan Daza put the Tourists ahead with a line drive single to center on an 0-2 pitch.
Jerry Vasto (2-3) recorded the final two outs of the eighth inning to get the win, and Josh Michalec retired the Drive in order in the ninth to log his 26th save.
Drive starter Jalen Beeks pitched a terrific game despite receiving a no-decision, as he struck out seven Asheville hitters over six and two-third innings while giving up just three hits, one earned run and one walk.
A two-out Asheville error in the bottom of the second kept the Drive alive, and Danny Mars made them pay by lining an RBI single to center off Carlos Polanco to make the score 1-0.
That unearned run was the only damage against Polanco, who gave up just four hits and two walks in his seven innings of work with four strikeouts.
Ryan Stephens tied the game up for the Tourists in the top of the fifth when he lined a pitch from Beeks into the right-center field bullpen for a solo homer.
The Tourists took the lead in the seventh after a Drive error, but an RBI groundout by Javier Guerra tied the game back up 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth.
Michael Chavis was the lone Greenville player with two hits, while Daza, Hoelscher and Stephens all did the trick for Asheville.
The Drive will look to avoid a series sweep at the hands of the Tourists on Thursday night. First pitch is at 7:05. LH Luis Ramos (1-1, 4.82 ERA) makes his Fluor Field debut for the Drive on the mound, while the Tourists will send RH Jesus Tinoco (1-0, 1.64) to the hill.
