Sand Gnats Walk Wild in 12-3 Victory Wednesday

Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats use a seven run fifth inning to walk past the Rome Braves 12-3 on Wednesday at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Sand Gnats have won nine straight and 17 of their last 20 games.

The Gnats (27-17/66-48) scored seven runs in the fifth inning on five consecutive walks, two doubles, and an RBI-single. Savannah batted around in the inning with RF Wuilmer Becerra collecting his 24th double of the year and CF John Mora and SS Luis Guillorme each collecting RBIs.

Rome (16-28/47-67) struck first in the game's opening frame after SS Omar Obregon walked. Back-to-back singles from C Bryan De La Rosa and RF Braxton Davidson scored Obregon. The Braves managed just the one run off starter Ricky Knapp (6-2). Knapp tossed 6.0 innings and struck out five.

Savannah scored three of their runs by way of the wild pitch. The Gnats took advantage of six wild pitches from the Braves pitching staff for single runs in the second, third, and fifth innings. C Tomas Nido launched a lead-off homer in the fourth inning off Braves starter Touki Toussaint (3-4), Nido's sixth homer on the season.

The Sand Gnats and Braves will conclude their three-game series tomorrow at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats will start RHP Casey Delgado (6-3, 3.24), while Rome will send RHP Sean Furney (6-5, 2.75) to the mound for the 7:05 PM start. Thursday will be Military Appreciation Night. Admission is free for active duty or veteran military personnel with military ID. Thursday is also Budweiser Thirsty Thursday with half-priced regular sodas and draft beers all night long brought to you by Budweiser, E-93, Connect Savannah, and I-95.
