Seven-Run Seventh Sends Legends to 11-5 Win

The Lexington Legends broke the game open with a seven-run seventh inning and went on to an 11-5 win over the Charleston RiverDogs Wednesday night in Charleston, South Carolina. Brandon Downes homered and drove in four runs for the Legends. Michael Hill had four hits in five at bats, and DonAndre Clark had three hits and two runs batted in. Legends starter Foster Griffin picked up his first win as a professional player.

The Legends took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. A double by Wander Franco and a single by Anderson Miller put runners at first and third, and Downes' sacrifice fly brought Franco home with the first run of the game. Miller, who had moved to second on Downes' fly ball, scored on Hill's double, and Hill came home on a base hit by Clark.

The RiverDogs came back with two runs in the third inning. Angel Aguilar singled and scored on a double by Billy Fleming. Fleming scored on a single by Bo Thompson.

Each team scored a run in the fourth inning, and the score remained 4-3 until the top of the seventh, when the first nine batters of the inning reached base safely for Lexington.

Clark led off with an infield single, and Corey Toups walked. Austin Bailey reached on a throwing error by catcher Collin Slaybaugh, loading the bases. Chad Johnson's double scored two runs, and Franco followed with a single, scoring Bailey as Johnson moved to third. After Johnson scored on a double by Miller, Downes launched a three-run blast over the center field wall, giving the Legends an 11-3 lead.

A two-run single by Charleston's Griffin Gordon in the bottom of the eighth closed out the scoring.

Foster Griffin, now 1-5 with Lexington in 2015 after going 0-2 with Burlington of the Appalachian League last season, worked five and two-thirds innings. He allowed eight hits and three runs, walked one batter and struck out two. Torey Deshazier pitched through the eighth inning, giving up two runs, and Eric Stout worked a scoreless ninth.

Charleston starter Justin Kamplain (3-13) took the loss.

Each team has won one game in the series, which concludes Thursday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
