Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Charleston, WV (August 29, 2006) -Tied at 2-2 with two on and two out in the bottom of the ninth inning of Tuesday night's game at Appalachian Power Park, Mike Bell ripped the game winning RBI single into right center field to score Lorenzo Cain as the West Virginia Power defeated the Greensboro Grasshoppers 3-2.
Greensboro scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning when Gary Roche hit a ground ball to second base with Greg Burns on third. Power second baseman Mike Bell's throw to the plate did not arrive in time, allowing Burns to score the go ahead run. West Virginia tied the game in the home half of the third after Nestor Corredor scored on Brett Hayes's throwing error.
In the fourth inning the Power took the lead on Tony Festa's solo homerun, his sixth of the season. Two innings later Agustin Septimo tied the game at 2-2 with a solo homerun, his seventh. Greensboro pitcher Mauro Zarate retired the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth inning before issuing two out walks to Lorenzo Cain and Mat Gamel. Mike Bell then ripped the second pitch of the at bat into center field to score Cain, marking the tenth time this season that West Virginia has won in their final at bat.
Will Inman, Patrick Ryan and Kevin Roberts combined to strike out 16 batters in the game, second most in a single game for the Power this season. West Virginia struck out 17 against Kannapolis back on June 22nd. Will Inman accounted for 11 of the 16 strikeouts, matching his single game season high. Inman pitched six innings, gave up two runs on three hits but did not get the decision. West Virginia has now won four in a row, their longest winning streak of the second half.
Kevin Roberts (6-10) struck out the only two batters he faced in the ninth inning and got the victory, while Mauro Zarate (3-4) suffered the loss. The Power are 73-59 on the year and 34-29 in the second half after the win while the Grasshoppers fell to 67-65 overall and 31-31 in the second half after the loss.
