Greenville Drive News Release
Augusta, GA - Through the first seven innings, the Greenville Drive remained in striking distance with the Southern Division champion Augusta GreenJackets, trailing 4-2. However, relief pitcher Ryan Colvin was charged with seven runs in the eighth inning without recording an out en route to the GreenJackets pulling away for an 11-2 victory at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Led by Anthony Contreras' two-run double, the GreenJackets plated five runs and had the bases loaded before Colvin was relieved by Blake Maxwell. Maxwell proceeded to give up an RBI single to Antoan Richardson before inducing Ben Copeland into a double play, which allowed Contreras to score. Maxwell was able to get out of the inning when Eugenio Velez grounded out, but by that point the damage had been done.
Greenville found themselves down early as starter Ryan Phillips (2-7) surrendered two runs in the bottom of the first. Copeland triple home Richardson and later scored on Mike Mooney's sacrifice fly.
The GreenJackets extended their lead an inning later as they added another run. Three straight singles to leadoff the frame allowed Augusta to take a 3-0 lead as Pablo Sandoval knocked in David Maroul.
In the fourth, Augusta would score yet another run to take a 4-0 lead. With two outs, Richardson singled home Barry Gunther who had led off the inning with a walk.
After being held scoreless through four innings, the Drive finally scored in the top of the fifth. Mike Leonard led off the inning with a double and scored three batters later as Mickey Hall singled with two outs.
The Drive would cut the GreenJackets lead in half as they scored again in the seventh. Dustin Kelly hit a one-out solo homer to left-center, just his second long ball of 2006.
The Drive and GreenJackets continue their four-game series Wednesday night with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Chris Jones will take the mound for Greenville in hopes of ending a seven-game losing streak versus the GreenJackets.
The Drive return home on September first to close out the 2006 season with a four-game series with the Kannapolis Intimidators. Tickets to can be purchased by calling the Drive Ticket Office at 864-240-4528 or online at www.greenvilledrive.com.
