Charleston RiverDogs News Release
Charleston RiverDogs first baseman Ben Jones was named to the 2006 South Atlantic League Annual All-Star team, the league announced Tuesday. Jones, currently tied for second in the league in home runs, was selected as the SAL's top first baseman out of all 16 teams.
A 25-year-old from Marion, La., Jones joined Charleston for a second consecutive season on May 6 after being sent down from the Tampa Yankees. He becomes the first RiverDogs prospect named to the SAL year-end all-star squad since the team became affiliated with the New York Yankees in 2005.
The 6-3, 200-pound right-hander is hitting .284 in 103 games, with a team-high 20 long balls and 76 RBI.
"This is a tremendous honor, and certainly a well-deserved one for Ben," said RiverDogs manager Pat Roessler, who doubles as the Yankees Director of Player Personnel. "He has worked hard to improve his game since last season, and that work has certainly paid off judging by his statistics."
With 34 career home runs as a RiverDog, Jones needs one more to tie the modern-day Charleston professional mark of 35 held currently by Tampa Bay prospect Wes Bankston (2003-04). Jones is also third on the Charleston professional list in RBI with 153 entering play Tuesday, eight behind Bankston for second place and 12 behind Roger Hansen's 165 (1981-82) for the top spot.
Jones was a 14th round draft choice by the Yankees in 2004 out of Louisiana-Monroe. He is currently third in the SAL in on-base percentage (.399) and fifth in slugging percentage (.508).
