Lake County Captains News Release

(Hagerstown, MD)-Jeramy Simmons pitched into the seventh inning and Kevin Tomasiewicz continued his mastery of the Captains as the Hagerstown Suns edged the Captains 3-2 Tuesday night at Municipal Stadium.

The last place Suns (25-39) have won two straight against the Captains (32-30).

Simmons (2-4) retired 11 in a row at one point. He scattered five hits and allowed only one, unearned run in the seventh. He walked one and struck out four. He left in the seventh with two runners on base and the Suns leading 3-1. Righthander Nick Abel came on and struck out back-to-back hitters to end the threat.

Abel gave up a run in the eighth on a double by Chris Gimenez and an RBI single by Mike Butia. He recovered to get a double-play ball from Nick Petrucci to strand the tying run on base.

In the ninth, Kevin Tomasiewicz came on and worked around a one-out single to post his 19th save. He has five saves against the Captains, including Monday night in the series opener.

Albert Vargas (5-13) worked seven innings in relief of starter Dan Cevette, who tossed two scoreless innings in his second rehab start. Vargas gave up an RBI single by Jose Castro in the third and a two-run homer by Jonel Pacheco in the sixth. Vargas did not walk a batter and struck out three.

The Captains got on the board in the seventh against Simmons when Fernando Pacheco's fly ball to right was dropped for an error. Nick Petrucci followed with an RBI double to make it 3-1.

The Captains left nine on base, and have stranded 20 in the series.

In game three of the series on Wednesday night, lefty Ryan Edell will start for the Captains, who have lost three straight games.
