Hickory Crawdads News Release

The Hickory Crawdads tallied five times in the fifth inning and twice more in the sixth rallying from a 4-0 deficit to defeat the Lexington Legends 7-5 in front of 1,267 fans at LP Frans Stadium Tuesday night

Legend catcher JR Towles drilled a one out, first inning, three-run homer off of Hickory starter Todd Redmond to give Lexington the early advantage. Redmond walked the leadoff man LF Nathan Warrick and CF Josh Flores singled before a pop out and the three run smash to left that got up in a very strong breeze and sailed away.

The Legends made it 4-0 in the second frame. Lexington 2B Eric King reached on an error leading off. After a fielder's choice grounder put King at second with one out, SS Pedro Espinoza grounded a ball slowly to short. Hickory SS Cameron Blair tried to make a bare hand play and missed the ball. It went into short left field for a hit and scored the run.

The Crawdads tallied five times against Lexington starter Garrett Murdy in the fifth inning. Consecutive singles from Blair, 2B Shelby Ford and DH Mike McCuistion loaded the bases with nobody out. Hickory RF Brad Corley sliced the lead to 4-2 with a two run double. Crawdad LF Jason Delaney's ground ball to second base made it 4-3. With one out and the tying run at third, Hickory catcher Steve Lerud pounded his 12th homer to give Hickory a 5-4 advantage.

Lexington tied the game on a one out homer by DH Ryan Reed off of Redmond in the fifth inning. It was the last run Redmond would allow and the game would not stay 5-5 for long.

In the bottom of the sixth inning Blair led off with a single against reliever Jake Hurry. With two outs Corley walked. Delaney followed with a two run double to give Hickory the 7-5 lead.

Redmond (12-6) allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits in seven innings to earn the win. Hurry (3-2) gave up two runs on four hits in two and one-third innings in the loss. Derek Drage pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Justin Vaclavik a run free ninth for his 16th save. Murdy went four and one-third innings for Lexington and gave up two runs on four hits.

The teams play at 7pm Wednesday night. Crawdad right hander Luis Valdez meets Lexington righty Ryan McKeller.
