CHARLESTON, S.C. - Zack Von Rosenberg, Casey Sadler, and Brooks Pounders teamed on a six-hit shutout, as the West Virginia Power edged the Charleston RiverDogs, 1-0, in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of a crowd of 2,974 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
West Virginia upped its record to 11-20 this half and 46-53 overall with the win, while Charleston dropped to 15-16 and 41-60.
Charleston's Jose A. Ramirez (5-4) and Von Rosenberg (4-7) hooked up in a rematch of their May 11 contest, and both were on top of their respective games.
Each pitched to contact effectively and worked around the little trouble that they did run into. The Power had their best scoring opportunity foiled on a unique double play in the top of the fifth inning.
With runners on first and second and one out, Andy Vasquez hit a bouncer back to the mound. Ramirez wheeled and threw to second for one out, and Jose Mojica fired home to nail Kevin Mort for the unconventional 1-6-2 twin-killing when he tried to come in all the way from second base.
West Virginia broke through, however, to take a 1-0 advantage in the top of the sixth. Mel Rojas Jr. stretched a line drive to left-centerfield into a leadoff double, and came into score on a RBI infield single by Chase Lyles.
Von Rosenberg took the loss in his prior matchup with the RiverDogs and entered with the highest ERA in the circuit among qualifying pitchers, but was sharp on this night. The 2009 6th round pick scattered four hits over 5.0 shutout frames, while striking out four and walking none.
Ramirez scuffled with his command, but mitigated the harm as well over 6.0 excellent innings. The 21-year old right-hander gave up just the one run on four hits and five walks, while notching three punchouts.
Francisco Rondon tossed two scoreless innings of relief, and Kelvin Perez added another in the ninth to keep Charleston within striking distance. The West Virginia bullpen was just as good, though, as Sadler authored two shutout frames before turning it over to Pounders, who racked up his first save with two scoreless innings of his own.
BALLPARK FUN: Being on the cutting edge of social media like Facebook and Twitter is a point of pride for Charleston's favorite professional sports team, and the RiverDogs rewarded fans who follow suit on another Social Media Appreciation Night. Facebook, Twitter and Text Club members received a text message offering them one free ticket to the game. Spectators were also able to kick back and relax after a Monday at the office by enjoying $1 beers in the Ashley View Pub on Hair of the Dog Monday, presented by 98Rock.
UP NEXT: The RiverDogs wrap up a seven-game homestand by hosting the Power in a 12:05 getaway day game. Zach Nuding (7-6, 4.44 ERA) will take the bump for Charleston, versus Jameson Taillon (2-2, 4.09 ERA) of West Virginia, the number two overall pick in last year's draft and the top prospect in the Pirates farm system.
Get out of that middle of the work-week funk by skipping out of the office and heading to The Joe to watch the RiverDogs take on the Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate in a matinee affair. Prepare to get wet and cool off from the hot weather, as the RiverDogs turn Riley Park into a water park on the annual Big Splash Day.
