POWER REPLAY: West Virginia lost 14-0 on Sunday afternoon at Charleston. The RiverDogs held a 4-0 lead after one, and added ten more runs against a total of six Power pitchers. Zac Fuesser took the loss, while Michael Recchia picked up the win.
MOVED: Zac Fuesser was added to the Power roster on Sunday in time to make the start. The corresponding roster move made by Pittsburgh when promoting Fuesser back from State College was to transfer Colton Cain to the Spikes roster. Like the Fuesser move last week, this is not expected to be permanent.
TOO MUCH: West Virginia's 14-run loss was their largest margin of defeat this season. The previous high defeat mark was 11 during the first homestand of the season; a 13-2 loss to Asheville at Appalachian Power Park. West Virginia also walked a season-high eight batters yesterday. The previous high was six walks; a feat that occured twice earlier this month.
NO FREE PASSES: Despite eight walks Sunday, West Virginia's pitching staff continues to lead all of baseball with the fewest number of batters walked this year. Power pitchers have combined to walk 221 batters through 98 games.
SOUTHERN SWING: West Virginia continues its final trip to Charleston, South Carolina with game three of a four game series tonight. The Power split on their last trip to Joseph P. Riley Park, winning on May 9 and 10, but falling in the next two games. These clubs met last weekend at Appalachian Power Park with the Power taking two of three including a walk-off win last Monday night on a Drew Maggi single. West Virginia is 16-11 all-time against the RiverDogs, including an 8-10 mark on the road in the set. The Power and RiverDogs only played four times during the entire 2010 season, but will meet 15 times over the course of the 2011 season.
WALK-OFF WOES: Thursday's loss was the seventh this season in walk-off fashion for the Power. West Virginia is 3-7 during games decided in the last at bat, including their most recent walk-off win on Monday night against the RiverDogs and last night's two out, bottom-of-the-ninth defeat.
BONUS BASEBALL: The Power are now 5-5 when playing extra innings this season after Wednesday's 12 inning win at Savannah. The club did not go to extra frames until May 23 against Lakewood, the 43rd game of the season, but has since done it nine other times over the last 54 games.
VERGE OF HISTORY: Rogelio Noris has 24 career home runs for West Virginia over a season and a half in a Power jersey. Noris has matched Stephen Chapman for the most home runs in any player's Power career. Chapman hit asingle-season record 24 home runs in a Power uniform in 2007.
TRIPLE THREAT: Andy Vasquez now has 10 triples this season, most in the SAL by four three-base hits. Vasquez has matched Quincy Latimore single season club record of 10. Latimore finished in a tie for second in triples during the 2009 season, the team's first year as an affiliate of the Pirates.
POWER POINTS: Eric Avila's six game hitting streak was stopped yesterday with an 0-3 performance.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh beat St. Louis 4-3 in 10... Indianapolis blanked Rochester 3-0... Altoona lost 7-2 to New Britain... Bradenton beat Tampa 2-1... State College beat Brooklyn 5-1.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
