Today: The first-half champion Gnats look for their fifth win in a row in game three of a four-game series with the Lexington Legends, SAL affiliate of the Houston Astros. The Gnats are 4-1 on their current seven-game home stand.
Sunday: In his first SAL start, RHP Michael Hebert tossed six shutout innings, yielding just two hits while fanning nine to lead the Gnats to a 4-2 win over the Legends. CF Darrell Ceciliani was 3-4 with a double and two runs scored from the top of the order.
Now Pitching: RHP Gonzalez Germen is scheduled to make his 20thappearance and his team-leading 18 th start tonight. Germen has been tough in July, when he has a 1.35 ERA (3 ER/20 IP) and 15 strikeouts against four walks (4.5 K/BB). Germen's 3.61 ERA is 16th in the SAL among qualified pitchers. In two outings against Lexington this year, Germen is 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA (3 ER/10 IP) with six walks and 10 hits against 10 strikeouts. Germen spent most of the 2010 season with Kingsport in the Appalachian League where he was 2-5 with a 3.69 ERA in 61 innings over 10 starts with 54 strikeouts and 11 walks. He made two starts with Savannah to finish out the year. On August 27th, in his Savannah debut, in game two of a double-header against Charleston, he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and a shutout into the seventh. The Gnats are 8-9 when Germen starts and have supported him with 4.47 runs per game (76 runs/17 starts), the third-best run support of any Savannah starter.
Hot Harris: Alonzo Harris rides a personal season-best nine-game hitting streak over which time he is 12-for-33 (.364) with a triple, a home run, a walk, eight strikeouts, three runs and six RBI.
Cordero's Cuts: After seven hits in his last two games, Albert Corderois now hitting .330/.366/.420 (AVG/OBP/SLG) with five extra-base hits and three walks in 23 games in the second half. Cordero hit .219/.248/.297 (AVG/OBP/SLG) with eight extra-base hits and four walks in 45 games in the first half.
Close Calls: All five games on the Gnats' homestand have been decided by one or two runs, including three one-run games. The Gnats are 17-4 in one-run games at home and 20-12 overall. Savannah is 38-22 in games decided by two runs or less, and 30-9 at home in such contests.
Alumni Update: Former Gnat Brahiam Maldonado earned the AA Eastern League's Player of the Week of July 18th-24th. Maldonado hit .450 (9-for-20) with a double, a triple, three home runs, five runs scored and nine RBI. As a 21-year old with Savannah in 2007, Maldonado hit .310/.349/.500 with 20 doubles and 10 homers in 87 games.
Division Dominance: The Gnats are 45-23 against the Southern Division and 27-9 at home. Savannah is 16-7 against the Southern Division in the second half.
Dollar Monday: In front of their Dollar Monday crowds, the Gnats are 5-1 at home on Monday. The team is 2-5 on the road on Monday.
Strong Arms: The Gnats still lead the SAL in ERA at 3.17, 40 hundredths better than second-best Lakewood. The Gnats also lead the League in WHIP at 1.22, and have allowed the fewest hits (759) - 29 fewer than second-best Hickory. The Asheville Tourists have allowed 1028 hits, most in the League, 269 more than the Gnats. The Gnats are fifth in the SAL in strikeouts (772).
Vs. Lexington: The Gnats are 6-5 against the Lexington Legends in 2011, 4-3 at home and 2-2 on the road. The two teams split a series in Lexington last week. The Gnats finish the 2011 regular season with five games in Lexington over Labor Day weekend September 1-5.
