Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads, 1st-Half Northern Division Champions, rallied with a run in the bottom of the 10th, but the Delmarva Shorebirds hung on for the 4-2 win in extra innings, before 777 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Monday night.
The Crawdads (59-40, 19-12) took the lead right away against LHP Matt Bywater in the bottom of the first inning. SS Jurickson Profar and CF Jake Skole worked consecutive walks to start the stanza. 3B Christian Villanueva cracked the scoreless tie with an RBI single through the left side of the infield, bringing in Profar for the 1-0 lead.
RHP Roman Mendez kept the 'Dads in the lead, allowing only one single and two walks through his first four scoreless innings in the start. However, the Shorebirds managed to tie it up with a solo home run by LF Riley Hornback in the top of the fifth, knotting it at 1-1.
Mendez concluded his outing with a three-up, three-down sixth inning, before giving way to RHP Ben Rowen (L, 2-3). Rowen kept the tie intact through the first three scoreless innings of his outing.
The Crawdads threatened to end the game in the bottom of the ninth. With runners at first and second and one out, Skole laced a single to right field. LF Braxton Lane attempted to score from second on the play, but Delmarva RF Brenden Webb fired a perfect throw to the plate, retiring Lane at the last minute and keeping it tied.
Delmarva then moved in front in the top of the 10th inning with three unearned runs against Rowen. With one out, Hornback singled to get himself on. SS Michael Rooney then bounced a potential double play grounder to short, but Profar couldn't quite field it cleanly, committing an error that enabled both runners to reach safely. After a ground out to first advanced Hornback and Rooney to third and second, respectively, 2B Mike Mooney struck with a two-out, two-run single to make it 3-1. Mooney took second on the throw home after his base hit, and then raced in on an RBI double by Webb, putting the Shorebirds in the 4-1 lead.
The 'Dads refused to go down easily in the bottom of the 10th. RHP David Walters (S, 23) retired the first batter he faced, but RF Josh Richmond and 2B Odubel Herrera knocked back-to-back doubles to bring the Crawdads within just two runs, 4-2. However, Walters retired the next two Crawdads on consecutive fly balls to center, as the Shorebirds hung on for the 4-2 win in 10 innings. RHP Tim Adleman (W, 5-5) tossed a scoreless ninth inning for the Shorebirds, registering the win.
