Power Play Outburst Leads Griffins Past Rampage

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Matt Puempel and Wade Megan both netted 5-on-3 power play goals, part of a three power play goal performance for Grand Rapids, as the Griffins (12-7-2) skated to a 4-3 win over the San Antonio Rampage (8-14-0) on Friday night at Van Andel Arena.

Mackenzie MacEachern, Jordan Kyrou, and Klim Kostin all scored for the Rampage, and Ville Husso stopped 19 shots in the loss. The Griffins improved to 5-0-1 in their last six games.

Filip Hronek opened the scoring for the Griffins at 6:23 of the first period. Seconds after leaving the penalty box, Hronek joined a 3-on-2 rush and beat Husso with a one-timer from the left circle for his fourth goal of the year, extending his points streak to five straight games and making it 1-0 Griffins.

Puempel made it 2-0 at 10:43 of the first. With Sam Lofquist in the box for boarding and MacEachern off for slashing, Puempel fired a wrist shot past Husso from the right circle for his tenth goal of the season.

The Griffins power play struck again at 2:21 of the second period, with former Rampage forward Turner Elson finishing a rebound in front for his eighth goal of the season to make it 3-0. Prior to Friday, the Griffins power play was ranked last in the league at 10.3 percent and had not scored multiple goals in a game.

MacEachern scored his third goal of the season at 5:27 of the second period to make it 3-1. A Tyler Wotherspoon point shot was blocked in front by teammate Austin Poganski, but Poganski gathered the loose puck and found MacEachern in the right circle for a shot up over the shoulder of Griffins goaltender Patrik Rybar.

At 8:51 of the second, Joey LaLeggia found Kyrou alone in front of the Grand Rapids net with a pass from the left point. Kyrou beat Rybar for his third goal of the season, and second in as many games, to make it 3-2.

Former Rampage forward Wade Megan restored the two-goal cushion for the Griffins with a 5-on-3 deflection at 16:08 of the second period, his third goal of the season. The Rampage have surrendered five goals on 5-on-3 power plays this season.

Kostin notched his fourth of the season at 17:03 of the second period, finishing on a breakaway created by a feed from Kyrou to make it 4-3.

The Rampage had 25 seconds of 5-on-3 power play time late in the third period, but could not score the equalizer. The San Antonio power play was 0-for-7, snapping a streak of seven consecutive games with a power play goal.

The Rampage visit the Chicago Wolves on Saturday night at Allstate Arena. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT, with the game available on The Ticket 760AM and on AHLTV.
