Binghamton Devils News Release
BINGHAMTON - Mackenzie Blackwood made 26 saves and Egor Sharangovich scored the eventual game winner as the Binghamton Devils ended a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the visiting Utica Comets on Wednesday night.
Nathan Bastian scored his fifth goal of the season to give the Devils a 1-0 lead after a great individual effort by Michael McLeod. In the offensive zone, McLeod went around the defense and cut to the net where Bastian cleaned up the loose puck after McLeod was denied by goaltender Thatcher Demko. Bastian's goal came 10:37 into the game with assists from McLeod and Colby Sissons.
On their third power play of the first period, the Comets finally answered to tie the game, 1-1. Brendan Gaunce slapped in a rebound from the left of goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood for his fourth of the year late in the first. Assists were given to Jesse Graham and Tanner MacMaster with just 0:46 left and the game was tied to start the second.
John Quenneville put the Devils up by one on the power play with his fifth of the year on a great shot from the left wing circle. Quenneville took a pass from Sissons and ripped a snap shot over the left shoulder of Demko for the 2-1 lead just 3:14 into the frame.
Quenneville helped put the Devils ahead by two goals as he set up Egor Sharangovich for his fourth of the year just over midway through the second. From the left side of the net, Quenneville dished the puck to Sharangovich who beat Demko on the back-door feedat 10:50. Assists from credited to Quenneville and Marian Studenic for a 3-1 lead.
Just over one minute later, the Comets pulled back within one courtesy of Zack MacEwen. The puck hopped by the Devils defense and MacEwen beat Blackwood for his ninth of the year with assists from Dylan Blujus and Ashton Sautner and the Devils lead was one goal, 3-2, after two periods.
The Devils went up by two as Ryan Schmelzer scored an empty-net goal late in the game to seal a 4-2 victory and end a four-game losing streak. Blackwood stopped 26 in the victory, his team-leading fourth of the year.
