Power Overwhelms Lakewood

The West Virginia Power beat the Lakewood BlueClaws 13-2 on Wednesday evening. The Power utilized 13 hits and five BlueClaws errors to score 13 runs and win by the largest margin in any game this season.

Taylor Lewis tripled and score on a groundout in the bottom of the first for an early advantage. The Power would add to the lead with a four run third. Lakewood starter Ethan Stewart walked Francisco Diaz before back-to-back infield grounders turned into two errors and helped West Virginia load the bases with one out. Willy Garcia singled in a pair and moved to second on a high throw to the plate. As Stewart picked up the errant throw at the backstop, Lewis had rounded third but slipped and was trying to recover at third base. Stewart threw high to third and the ball rolled into the left field corner, allowing Lewis and Garcia to score on the second error if the play for a 5-0 lead.

Zack Von Rosenberg followed with a three up-three down fourth inning and held the BlueClaws at bay until the top of the fifth. Lakewood notched its first run on a walk and a double for a 5-1 deficit.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Power broke the game open and knocked Stewart from the game in the process. Eric Avila hit a three-run home run off Stewart for an 8-1 lead and Taylor Lewis added a two-run single off Moises Rivas for a 10-1 edge.

After the BlueClaws scored their second and final tally in the top of the sixth, the Power added three more runs. In the seventh, Ashley Ponce singled in Francisco Aponte. Diaz capped the scoring with his first home run of the season; a two-run shot off Austin Brough for a 13-2 Power lead.

Von Rosenberg (2-2) pitched six quality innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four. Clario Perez pitched the final three innings for his first save of the season. Stewart (4-7) lost for the first time since May 30; a 10-5 defeat at the hands of the Power.

Eight of the nine West Virginia batters had at least one hit, and all nine men in the lineup scored at least one run. Five players had two hits each and four drove in multiple runs. Prior to Wednesday's win, the Power had not beaten any team by more than five runs in any game this season. For the BlueClaws, Chris Duffy went hitless to see his 19-game hitting streak and 36-game on-base streak come to an end.

West Virginia and Lakewood continue this five game series Thursday night at 7:05 pm. Nick Kingham and Lino Martinez will start for the Power and BlueClaws, respectively, at Appalachian Power Park.
