Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - The Sand Gnats launched two mortars but it was one too few to avoid a 3-2 loss to the Charleston RiverDogs on Independence Day at Historic Grayson Stadium in front of a crowd of 4,180. The crowd was the largest of the season for the Gnats.
The Gnats (4-10/45-36) scored both of their runs on solo homers. 3B Aderlin Rodriguez gave the Gnats a 1-0 lead with a blast to leftfield to lead off the bottom of the second inning. Down 3-1, C Cam Maron brought the Gnats within a run in the fifth. It was the 14th homer of the year for Rodriguez and the third for Maron.
The RiverDogs (9-5/48-33) took the lead with two runs in the top of the third inning. Two groundball singles and an error on second baseman Brandon Brown loaded the bases with one out. 2B Ali Castillo put Charleston out in front with a two-run single through the hole on the left side.
Charleston added another run in the fifth. With two outs and DH Francisco Arcia at third and SS Cito Culver at first, Culver took off for second. C Albert Cordero's throw would have easily beat Culver, who pulled up short of second. By the time Brown, who fielded the throw, looked toward home plate, Arcia was racing home with the 'Dogs third run. Brown's throw to first hit Culver, allowing him to go to second.
Down 3-2, the Gnats rallied in the eighth. Rodriguez singled with two outs. 1B Brian Harrison doubled off the warning track in left, but Rodriguez was thrown out at home plate on a well-executed Charleston relay.
Gnats starter Jacob deGrom (3-3, 2.64) was charged with three runs, two earned on six hits in 5.2 innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. He improved his strikeout-to-walk ratio to 6.6 (46 K/7 BB) in 58 innings this year.
The Gnats send RHP Michael Fulmer (5-4, 3.00) to the mound in game two of the series Thursday against LHP Matt Bashore (1-2, 2.13) for Charleston. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and gates open at 6 pm. The pregame show on the radio broadcast, presented by Subway, on News/Talk 630 and online at sandgnats.com begins at 6:45.
